Senior Director, Food Safety Policy

Description

Primary Purpose:

Serve as the lead advocate to advance the interests of FMI members and the food industry by identifying key public policy issues and developments and advancing industry goals in the areas of food safety through a joint federal legislative and regulatory strategy. Work closely with the food and product safety team and Food Protection Committee, Product Suppliers Scientific Affairs Committee, and Government Relations Committee to understand and design strategies to advocate for key policies. Work with the state government affairs team and state associations to also advance policy arguments that are consistent with state and local efforts.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work seamlessly with the food safety and government relations functions internal and external to FMI.
  • Plan and implement advocacy activities and strategies on industry issues to influence the outcome of legislative and regulatory actions. Analyze issues in relation to FMI, the food industry, and the political landscape. Determine actions and positions to be taken by FMI.
  • Lead member meetings to facilitate collaboration and consensus on key advocacy issues related to food and product safety.
  • Build and maintain stakeholder coalitions and engage allied associations to enhance advocacy efforts.
  • Represent FMI on coalitions on food and product safety.
  • Provide information to the FMI food and product safety team and committees, other lobbyists, FMI management, and FMIs Government Relations Committee on policy issues related to food safety.
  • Manage all FMI contacts with Senators and Representatives for lobbying and fundraising. Build and maintain relationships within Congress and the Executive Branch, keep policymakers informed about food industry concerns, perspectives, and positions.
  • Communicate regularly with FMI members and staff regarding policy issues. Provide guidance to members on individual questions/concerns regarding legislation, regulations, and public policy. Write position papers, letters, testimony, and other issue-related materials to communicate and articulate FMIs positions to FMI members and congressional and regulatory decision-makers.
  • Develop grassroots strategies and tactics to mobilize stakeholders on policy issues at the local, state, and federal levels. Provide FMI Political Action Committee with information and make recommendations regarding FMI PAC contributions for Senators and Representatives.
  • Share expertise with FMIs Communications Department for media interviews.
  • Develop, prepare, monitor, audit, oversee, review, and approve budgets related to lobbying efforts.
  • Represent department and FMI to internal and external parties.

 

Other Job Functions:

  • Maintain professional skills and contacts with various professional and trade associations.
  • Develop and implement strategic lobbying plans and participate in developing division-wide strategies.
  • Initiate economic and legal studies to anticipate industry-related issues and support FMIs policy positions.
  • Plan and organize membership coalition meetings.
  • Respond to requests for information both internally and externally regarding assigned issues or issue-related activities.
  • Provide information to and represent government relations needs in support of FMI committees, workgroups, and other FMI-member groups.
  • Other duties and projects as requested or required.

 

 
Position Requirements

Physical Requirements:

Normal office environment requiring use of typical business equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, fax, copier). Ability to regularly attend local meetings off-site.

Education, Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of ten to fifteen years or prior professional work experience in a similar role or related field.
  • College degree or equivalent work experience in government affairs. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Prior experience in lobbying or on Capitol Hill. Extensive knowledge of the political process including legislative initiatives, legislative and executive processes, legislative communication techniques, and the dynamics of politics at the federal level.
  • At least two years prior management experience, including budget and staff management.
  • Ability to understand technical issues and work closely with the food and product safety team.
  • Computer literacy with understanding of and ability to use Microsoft Office products.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills including presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Strong customer service and team orientation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including strong negotiating and influencing skills.
  • Strong time management and project planning skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks with attention to detail.
