Manager, Communications

Description

Primary Purpose: 

To create, implement and oversee public relations and communications programs at FMI. This role will serve FMI members by helping to build and execute successful communications campaigns related to issues and brand management, public policy and regulatory issues at the federal level, serving as a communications liaison and principal to the government affairs and food safety teams. The role will help develop strategic campaigns and public relations tactics against policy and regulatory priorities and drive awareness among key media stakeholders and influencers. This role will also support the state affairs team on grassroots outreach and amplification strategies. Representing a significant role within the communications and marketing team, the manager of communications will support FMI’s robust and growing digital engagement strategy and editorial agenda.

Essential Job Functions:

Public Relations (PR) and Digital Communications Management

  • In collaborative fashion with editorial planning and PR team leads, execute social media tactics, campaigns and strategies
  • Work with PR team to support media relations activities, nurturing relationships with both trade and business press
  • Support the development and implementation of digital communication strategies for FMI’s blog and social media channels
  • Support the digital communications function by analyzing data from web analytics reports to measure PR impact
  • Implement content strategies to drive traffic to the various communications platforms and monitor the effectiveness of the strategies
  • Support production and distribution of membership publications such as newsletters, annual reports and content for the FMI website
  • Work closely with the Web team at FMI to manage interface and digital coordination of material published via the blog and website

 

Public Affairs Communications Management

  • Develop media relationships with Capitol Hill reporters on priority issues; pitch and engage press on FMI policy priorities
  • Identify and grow social media opportunities on legislative and regulatory issues
  • Develop creative, effective approaches to difficult communications challenges
  • Enhance dialog and engagement opportunities with member companies by leveraging information from the FMI database and utilizing quick surveys, webinars, digital tools and other recommended tactics
  • Ensure that all lobbyist and PR activities have a strong member communications and social media component
  • Broaden FMI editorial calendar on policy and regulatory issues, identifying opportunities for both media and member communications
  • Edit, manage and influence production and distribution of government relations publications such as newsletters, mid-year and annual reports and content for fmi.org
  • Work closely with the digital communications and marketing functions at FMI to manage interface and coordination of material published via FMI channels, namely the government relations social media channels
  • With guidance from PR team leads, execute social media tactics, campaigns and strategies relating to public affairs

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal office environment requiring use of typical business equipment (e.g., computer, telephone, fax and copier machines)
  • Ability to travel to meetings to support on-site activities

 

 
Position Requirements
  • College degree in communications, public relations, political science, digital marketing, or related areas and a minimum of three to five years of prior professional work experience
  • Previous work in a communications role or in a related capacity on Capitol Hill
  • Proven track record working on public policy communications for a company or in the public sector
  • Strong media relations experience
  • Computer and Internet expertise with an excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe products, MailChimp, and web content management systems. Ability to understand and use database software to process and maintain spreadsheet information
  • Proficient in basic HTML coding and Web analytics gathering
  • Experience using various social media platforms, including, but not limited to LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube
  • Experience with leveraging social media management and analytics tools, including but not limited to Cision, Hootsuite and other social monitoring systems
  • Experience writing, editing and crafting content for web and social media
  • Experience in the preparation of invoices, business accounts and reports
  • Excellent telephone and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (including editing and proofreading skills)
  • Strong customer service and team orientation
  • Self-directed with excellent time and project management skills and an ability to organize, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks with strict attention to detail and with minimal supervision
