About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Assist the Senior Director of Animal Welfare in coordination of animal welfare specialists and daily operations.
  • Instruct, train and assist staff with their duties, use of equipment, and materials in assigned areas.
  • Ensure efficient utilization of adoption suites and condos, by communicating the movement of adoptable animals from the hospital to adoption center in a timely manner.
  • Interface with all departments within the Houston SPCA and be willing to assist other teams if requested.
  • Maintain companion animal product inventory and order food and supplies as needed. Report issues/needs to Senior Director of Animal Welfare. 
  • Responsible for coordination and operations of Animal Welfare programs including PetsMart adoptions, Nursery, Neiman Marcus adoptions, Working Cat adoptions, PetSafe program, Transfer program and special events.
  • Assist Senior Director of Animal Welfare with staff and procedural scheduling.
  • Assist staff with initial customer questions and/or issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist as directed in the counseling of Animal welfare Specialists concerning performance and development. Lead by example. Recognize positive efforts and results. When necessary, address deficient performances quickly and professionally, which may include absenteeism, insubordination, subpar performance, etc.
  • Assure that procedures are followed and maintained according to Houston SPCA policy, including sanitization, companion animal husbandry, and adoption processes.
  • Responsible for entering accurate information regarding customers and animals in the shelter database as well as partner databases.
  • Update the Senior Director of Animal Welfare on areas of interest and/or concern.
  • Ensure all companion animal and adoption areas are clean, safe, and organized for the public, staff, volunteers and animals within the Houston SPCA’s care.
  • Complete opening and/or closing duties of the shelter as directed.
  • Exhibit a thorough knowledge of the Houston SPCA adoption policies and procedures, as well as knowledge of Houston SPCA partners and products/services they offer.
  • Create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, including with volunteers, other departments and employees, and the public. Work collaboratively. Interface professionally with all department supervisors within the Houston SPCA.
  • Protect all confidential information, including information related to customers, donors, animals, and internal communications.
  • Follow the mission of the Houston SPCA. Represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Provide information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

 

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years of previous supervisory experience.
  • Min of 5+ years’ work experience.
  • Follow the mission of the Houston SPCA.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Houston SPCA adoption policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Houston SPCA partners and products/services they offer.
  • Knowledge of the Houston SPCA policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to admitting, cleaning and medical protocols.
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
  • Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness.
  • Ability to represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player.
  • Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record is optimum.
  • Ability to work unscheduled hours.
  • Must be able to safely lift 50lb, carry, and push and pull heavy objects, with or without assistance.
