Description

For more than 100 years, Houston SPCA has been a leader in animal protection, rescue, veterinary care, cruelty investigation, wildlife rehabilitation, and community education. We save and improve the lives of more than 57,000 animals annually and work tirelessly to create a more compassionate community.

We are seeking a Vice President of Finance who is an analytical, systems-oriented, forward-thinking leader who can build efficient frameworks, elevate data-driven decision-making, and ensure financial strength to support our growing mission.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to use their financial expertise to make a direct and lasting impact on animals, people, and our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all financial operations for a multifaceted nonprofit that includes animal care, veterinary services, wildlife rehabilitation, rescue/ambulance programs, investigations, and community outreach.
  • Lead financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, scenario modeling, and long-term planning to support mission growth.
  • Implement and refine financial systems, tools, and processes that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Provide timely, data-driven insights to the CEO, Executive Team, and Board of Directors.
  • Ensure strong internal controls, accounting integrity, and compliance with nonprofit financial regulations.
  • Partner with program leaders to understand operational needs, evaluate ROI, and inform decision-making with clear financial analysis.
  • Oversee annual audits, 990 preparation, grant financials, and restricted funding allocations.
  • Develop financial dashboards and metrics that create transparency and support strategic execution.
  • Manage, mentor and develop the finance, IT and facilities teams, cultivating a high-performance culture rooted in accountability, logic, and operational excellence.

Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership, ideally in nonprofit, healthcare, animal welfare, or complex multi-program organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and modernize financial systems and processes.
  • Strong background in budgeting, forecasting, modeling, and strategic planning.
  • Experience overseeing audits, compliance, and financial reporting.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with diverse teams, communicate complex ideas clearly, and lead through data.
  • Systems thinker with a strong process-improvement mindset and a high level of autonomy.
