Description

Primary Purpose:

Under direction of the Director of Companion Animal Care, supervises the animal care team; coordinates daily kennel operations; participates in daily animal care activities; monitors and assists with animal needs; and coordinates with shelter veterinarians for animal medical needs. Responsible for hands-on supervision of a department of 20 + employees to ensure humane care of all animals. Position requires the ability to manage multiple priorities, lead, develop and motivate a diverse staff, build teams and resolve conflict. Strong computer skills, phone skills, organizational skills and time management are a must. Previous experience working in animal welfare is desired but not required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the animal care team
  • Ensure team members provide a high level of positive customer service experiences to visitors
  • Develop and implement care protocols and procedures
  • Ensure all animals receive proper nutrition, always including access to fresh water, and food in appropriate amounts and at regular intervals. medications, and treatments
  • Monitor the health and behavior of animals and report concerns to the veterinary services team.
  • Maintain accurate records of animal care and treatments
  • Schedule and supervise animal caretakers
  • Enforce attendance, dress code, communication polices, and all protocols and procedures related to the department.
  • Conduct training sessions for new and existing staff
  • Coordinate with veterinarians and other specialists as needed
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of animal habitats
  • Ensure cleanliness of public access areas
  • Manage inventory and functionality of animal care supplies
  • Respond to emergencies and provide first aid to animals
  • Communicate with pet owners or clients regarding post-adoption animal care
  • Ensure compliance with local and federal animal care regulations
  • Participate in adoption and outreach programs
  • Work with the Volunteer Program Coordinator to integrate trained volunteers into the animal care, socialization, cleaning, and public visitation routines at the shelter.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in animal science or related field
  • Several years of experience in animal care or related field
  • Previous supervisory or management experience
  • Strong knowledge of animal care best practices
  • Experience with a variety of animal species
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends
  • Physical stamina to handle and care for animals
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and health requirements
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping
  • Hands-on work with dogs of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments.
  • May require lifting up to 50lbs and working in all weather conditions
  • Work may be conducted indoors and outdoors.
