About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Description

Since 1924, Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been the leading private, nonprofit animal welfare organization in the greater Houston region. Receiving no governmental funding, we rely upon community financial support to achieve our goals of improving and protecting the lives of animals in our community and alleviating their suffering and abuse.

Join our Summer Job Program for students who are looking to gain essential hands-on veterinary experience while making a difference in the lives of animals and people within our community. Applicants are required to be currently enrolled in a natural science, veterinary, pre-veterinary, or veterinary nursing/technical program. This is a 10 to 13-week program, lasting from June through August. Some flexibility may be offered to accommodate semester start and end times.

Our program allows students to gain hands-on experience building essential technical skills that align with their interests, which may include the following:

  • Veterinarian (Safe Animal Handling, Physical Exams, Blood Draws, Surgical Prep, Anesthesia Monitoring, Laboratory Skills, etc.)
  • Community Outreach
  • Equine and Farm Animal Care
  • Wildlife Care
  • Nursery and Adoptions Center
  • Animal Rescue Exposure
  • Pet Wellness Clinic

Participants will also gain exposure to a variety of clinical and shelter medicine topics, such as:

  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Neonatal Animal Care
  • Surgery
  • Animal Behavior

Each student will receive mentorship and guidance to develop goals and monitor professional development throughout the summer.
