Position eligible for bilingual pay differential.

 

SUPERVISION:

Non-Supervisory.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

Provides support services to the Child and Adult Protective Services division. Translates and interprets, conveying the meaning of written and verbal conversation from one language to another. Supervises family time. May provide direct care to children, assist with parenting skills training and household management, and provide transportation for clients.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Translation and Interpretation Services:

  • Accurately and word for word conveys the meaning & tone of conversations from Spanish to English and English to Spanish.
  • Assist families in navigating the system through providing referral information, familiarizing individuals with available services and providing support and follow up.
  • Ensure the translated texts convey original meaning.
  • Read and understand DHS developed documents.
  • Translate English forms, flyers, training materials and other written documents into Spanish.
  • Communicate with parents in English & Spanish, communicating the importance of establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for the children.

Client and Colleague Support Services:

Family Time:

  • Implements the Human Services Parent coaching program and follows selected curriculum. Follows all internal family time guidelines and expectations. Duties include but are not limited to intervention, assessments, coaching, scheduling visits and providing transportation.
  • Conducts assessments of parent/caregiver-child interactions to determine need of intervention from the Family Time Program. Intervention may include coaching, monitored visits, and group family time. Recommend the appropriateness of unsupervised time based on assessments.
  • Models appropriate interactions with children and engages children in meaning play including learning games and activities designed to enhance their knowledge and social skills. Provides information to parents about child development, child management, nutrition, and how to engage with their children.
  • Supports the goal of family reunification and family relationships. Encourage health family relationships and self-confidence.
  • Keeps records of contacts with clients in TRAILS and completes monthly summaries on contacts.
  • Schedules and provides transportation through coordination with the caseworkers and clients as needed.

Caseworker Support:

  • Provides feedback to parents and the caseworker assigned to the case on family interactions and observations. Observations are reported to caseworker in written form or verbally.

Family Life Skills:

  • Assists parents and caregivers with essential life skills development including but not limited to household management, housekeeping, organization, nutrition and food preparation, and child safety.
  • Assists families in navigating the system through providing referral information, familiarizing individuals with available services and providing support and follow-up.

Administrative:

  • Performs assigned duties related to clerical work, data entry, and other general supportive tasks.
  • Acts as a mandated reporter.

Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as determined by Garfield County may be substituted for the following requirements.)

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Formal training in translating and interpreting Spanish/English.
  • Experience: Two years of experience translating and interpreting English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Two years of experience working with public entities and direct childcare.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Valid Driver’s License. Translator/interpreter certification(s) preferred or demonstrated ability to obtain such certifications.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Sitting: Frequently sitting at a desk, computer, or workstation for extended periods, performing administrative tasks and using computer equipment.
  • Lifting and Carrying: Frequently lift and carry, including children in-and-out of safety car seats, weighing up to 45 pounds. Occasional lifting and carrying of lightweight office supplies, documents, or small packages may be required, typically not exceeding 15 pounds.
  • Bending and Reaching: Frequent bending and reaching, including into vehicles to adjust and fasten children into safety car seats. May involve occasional bending or reaching to access office equipment, files, or supplies within standard office settings.
  • Grasping and Typing: Ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and office equipment, demonstrating fine motor skills for typing, clicking, and manipulating documents.
  • Visual Acuity: Clear vision for reading printed and on-screen materials, including text, graphics, and data, and for viewing computer monitors for extended periods.
  • Hearing: Adequate hearing to engage in conversations, respond to telephone calls, and interact with colleagues in a typical office environment.
  • Walking/Mobility: Frequent walking, or mobility, within and outside of the office premises may be necessary to transport children, supervise family time, provide home-based services, attend meetings, access common areas, or collaborate with colleagues.
  • Stamina: Maintain the ability to maintain focus, productivity, and attention to detail while working at a desk for standard office hours.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment. Extended periods of sitting are required.

WORK HOURS:

General work hours are 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. Before and after-hours commitments are frequently expected.

REQUIRED TRAVEL:

The employee is regularly required to travel within the County.

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT:

Computer and relevant software applications, spreadsheets, calendars, and word processing. Will also work with calculators, telephone systems, and mobile phones.
