Geneva College is a Christian liberal arts college in the reformed tradition located about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1848 by the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, Geneva has majors in both liberal arts and pre-professional programs, and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Geneva's faculty provide a challenging education that prepares students for careers, for further education, and for life. In all fields of study, students are challenged to explore the implications of the Christian faith on their discipline. Geneva has approximately 1,350 students enrolled in its various programs taught by its faculty of nearly 70 members. The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.

 

Geneva College invites applications for a tenure track position in Mathematics starting in August of 2024. Review of applications will begin in mid-March and the position will remain open until filled. Minority and female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Geneva College is a Christian liberal arts college with majors and minors in mathematics and physics and an ABET-accredited engineering program. The position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, but higher rank may be considered based upon qualifications and experience. This position will be administered within the Department of Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. The field of particular expertise is flexible but should be in one of the following: Applied or Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Experimental or Applied Physics, or a closely related field such as Engineering. The Ph.D. degree in one of the disciplines listed above is required for tenure track position. M.A./M.S. candidates are welcome apply for this position, but such candidates will be appointed to a non-tenure track position. Geneva is a small college that values inter-disciplinary work, so demonstrated ability and willingness to teach lower and higher-level courses is essential. Teaching responsibilities will primarily include lectures for both major and non-major courses. The mathematics program serves non-majors in lower-level courses, and this position will include teaching of those courses with active-learning pedagogical approaches appropriate to those students. The following list describes courses from which teaching assignments for this position will be chosen, commensurate with candidate qualifications and expertise. In application materials, candidates should indicate which of these courses they would feel qualified to teach, either presently or potentially.

  • Introductory Algebra, College Algebra, Introduction to Statistics, Pre-calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Probability and Statistics I, Probability and Statistics II, Calculus, and possibly higher math courses.

 

The candidate would also be encouraged and expected to develop a program of projects and research for undergraduate students, to serve students through academic advising, and to serve the college through committee participation. The successful candidate must support the mission of the College of integrating a Christian worldview with their discipline.

Geneva is organized into academic departments which report directly to the Provost. This position is in the Department of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and would report to the chair of that department. Our department has a history of collaboration with the ABET-accredited Engineering Department, with some courses occasionally taught by faculty members in the other department when there is overlap in expertise. All work in these two departments is with undergraduates.

  5. A current vita/CV.
  6. Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts (official copies will be required before being appointed).

 

Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)

  1. Teach twelve contact hours per semester.
  2. Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons (Note: preparation time will vary based on instructor experience in teaching that course).
  3. Provide each student with clear course expectations, evaluations, and timelines through carefully written topical outlines and approved syllabus per faculty established guidelines.
  4. Provide interesting and relevant assignments for students that demonstrate learning outcomes in a real-life setting.
  5. Suitably challenge, engage, support, and communicate with students to encourage their participation and learning while maintaining mutual value and respect.
  6. Provide timely grades to students through college software and upload mid-term and final grades by college deadlines.
  7. Respond to student questions on a timely basis.
  8. Ensure course and program learning outcomes are delivered as defined by the syllabus.

Job Requirements - Administrative:

  1. General: Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed or are able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations in order to safely perform the essential responsibilities of the job.
  2. Physical: Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum:
    1. Education/Certification: An M.A./M.S. degree in one of the following is required: Applied or Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Experimental or Applied Physics, or a closely related field such as Engineering.
    2. Experience: Demonstrated experience or aptitude for classroom teaching is required.
    3. Christian Commitment: eligible candidates must be thoughtful and articulate Christians and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to candidates who support and have an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. The individual must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
  2. Preferred:
    1. Education/Certification: A Ph.D. in one of the following: Applied or Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Experimental or Applied Physics, or a closely related field such as Engineering.
