General Position Summary:

This position reports to the Executive Director and is one half of the Program Directorship partnership responsible for overseeing CBE’s Northern California work in East Oakland and Richmond.This includes campaign strategy, leadership development, networking, movement building and coordinating with CBE’s Development and Finance departments on program grants and funds. The Program Director has the duty and privilege of working with CBE’s diverse staff in the Organizing, Research and Legal departments to ensure the integrated program strategy that makes CBE the unique and successful force it has been in the Environmental Justice movement. Between them, the two Co-Directors supervise all Northern California Organizers. The Program Director is also part of CBE’s dynamic statewide Admin Team that facilitates the organization’s growth and development.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervise organizing, campaign, and program staff in Richmond with attention to supporting their sustainability and growth

  • Oversee and coordinate the larger Richmond community team, which includes organizers, researchers, legal, civic engagement, communications and development staff

  • Ensure accountability and coordination between community members and the organization

  • Work with Northern California Program Co-Director for East Oakland to coordinate organizing efforts in Nor Cal

  • Help develop, implement, and participate in key campaign and coalition activities as needed

  • Collaborate with Wilmington, Southeast LA and East Oakland Program Co-Directors to help develop and oversee structures and processes such as CBE organizing model

  • Work with Northern California Program Co-Director for East Oakland to coordinate Bi-annual campaign and department planning and evaluation processes

  • Work with East Oakland Program Director to hire, manage, and develop staff in Nor Cal Organizing Department

  • Lead relationship-building with partners in alliances and coalitions

  • Represent and communicate the Richmond team’s interests and resource needs at Funder team; contribute to proposals, reports, and fundraising activities

  • Represent the Richmond team in Statewide Admin Team?and Nor Cal Admin Team, to help shape the larger administrative processes and procedures of the organization

  • Track and approve budgets and financial disbursements for organizing campaigns

  • Participate in CBE Policy team to coordinate regional/statewide policy activities with organizers

  • Support the roll out and integration of policy advocacy, lobbying, and electoral engagement in the organizing department through CBE Action, a 501c4.

  • Drive development of Richmond campaign narrative strategy with statewide Communications team

  • Coordinate with Nor Cal and So Cal Program Directors to connect on organizing programs and building connections across communities

 

 

In addition to the above, racial equity and language justice are key areas supported by the Northern California Program Co-Director. CBE has made a commitment to addressing anti-blackness and white supremacy culture within our organization, and the Northern California Program Co-Director will participate in CBE’s internal work to meet equity goals and will be a bridge to our members’ participation.

 

 

EXPERIENCE AND JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental and climate justice?and experience working with low-income communities of color

  • Expertise in grassroots community or labor organizing

  • Management experience, including supervision and leadership development of multiple staff on a team

  • Experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating community-based environmental or social justice campaigns and programs

  • Experienced in group facilitation and consensus-based decision-making

  • Experience with conflict resolution through a transformative and restorative framework

  • Experience with fundraising?and budget management

  • Strong people skills: be community-friendly and have the ability to engage a broad spectrum of people representing various social, cultural and professional backgrounds

  • Strong oral and written communication, time management, and project management skills

  • High accuracy, attention to detail, organization, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks

  • Ability to ensure a positive, team-oriented environment

  • Ability to understand and navigate a complex political environment

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with regulatory processes, especially local policies and California state legislation

  • Familiarity with the political landscape in Richmond

 

 

Benefits and Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, with an annual salary of $84,937 and an average expected work week of around 40 hours. The Northern California Program Co-Director will receive CBE’s comprehensive benefits package, including a generous vacation and leave policy (26 days of paid leave in the first year, including holidays); fully-paid premiums for medical, vision, and dental insurance; an additional mental health benefit; a 401(k) retirement plan; and a flexible spending plan. CBE pays full premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, spouse or domestic partner, and any dependents.
