The program coordinator position resides at the Langley Research Center, Office of STEM Engagement. The position does not include telework or other flexible work schedule options except on an occasional basis with prior approval by the GSFC Office of STEM Engagement management.

Project Description:

The goal of the MAIANSE Activity is to utilize NASA’s unique contributions in collaboration with TCU and other tribal-serving institutions to improve the overall quality of the Nation’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. The goal of the SMD SciAct awards is to help learners of all ages “do” science through 24 competitively-selected teams from across the Nation that connect NASA science experts, real content, and experiences with community leaders to do science in ways that activate minds and promote understanding.

Job Description

The Program Coordinator provides support to NASA’s MUREP for American Indian Alaskan Native STEM Engagement (MAIANSE) (which includes the former NASA ESTEEM) activity and its goal to utilize NASA’s unique contributions in collaboration with tribal colleges and universities (TCU), American Indian and Alaska Native serving institutions (AIANSI) and other tribal-serving institutions to improve the overall quality of the Nation’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education.  This support is provided through GSFC Office of STEM Engagement which is the Lead Center for the MUREP MAIANSE program.  The Program Coordinator also provides support to NASA’s SMD Science Activation Program, as it relates to TCU and AIANSI institutions, and to Native American and Native Alaskan populations.

Specifically, support to TCUs and other tribal-serving institutions participation in higher education programs across NASA aligned with the agency’s STEM engagement goals and objectives.

Program Coordinator will support the following:

MUREP for American Indian Alaskan Native STEM Engagement (MAIANSE)

SMD SciAct Award Arctic and Earth SIGNs (STEM Integrating GLOBE and NASA), or others as required.

The GSFC consolidated recruitment strategy and underrepresented and underserved students, specifically TCUs and other tribal-serving institutions participating in NASA STEM engagement and research projects in their pursuit of STEM careers. 

Higher education programs to enhance the capabilities of TCUs and other tribal-serving institutions contributions to the research needs of science and technology enterprises.

GSFC’s STEM engagement specialist in implementing NASA’s single, unified approach. Specifically, the contractor will support the following three focus areas to increase TCUs and other tribal-serving institutions participation in NASA STEM Engagement.

Primary Focus Areas:

Focus Area 1:  Create unique opportunities for students and the public to contribute to NASA’s work in exploration and discovery.

Focus Area 2:  Build a diverse future STEM workforce by engaging students in authentic learning experiences with NASA’s people, content and facilities.

Focus Area 3:  Strengthen public understanding by enabling powerful connections to NASA’s mission and work.

Key Responsibilities

Provide support to the MAIANSE activity in implementing, managing, coordinating, assessing, and communicating the Agency’s minority, diversity and inclusion STEM engagement programs, projects and opportunities to promote TCUs, AIANSIs and other tribal serving organizations’ participation in higher education programs across the Agency’s three focus areas.

Liaison between MUREP/TCU and Native Serving activities within each Center and at the Agency level for Agency level programs and act as a point of contact for Communications matters with respect to higher education institutional operations and engagement strategies;

Communications planning and execution that is informed by NASA strategies, and includes Inter-Center and Inter-Agency collaboration. Developing relationships and opportunities for collaboration with other NASA Centers.  Support engagement strategies with potential Agency partners, creating plans and communications in support of those strategies, and developing relationships and opportunities for collaboration with other Federal Agencies.

Coordinate, support and assist higher education programs across the three focus areas to enhance the capabilities of TCUs and other tribal-serving institutions’ contributions to the research needs of science and technology enterprises.

Assist in developing collaborations, trainings, and opportunities with TCUs and AIANSIs in planning, designing and implementing teacher preparation and in-service programs that improve the quality and increase diversity of STEM educator workforce.

Assist in the recruitment, selection and placement of TCU and AIANSI students in research opportunities as developed in the NIAMS, especially through timely, relevant communications.  Support and assist Office of STEM Engagement internship placement team as needed in developing communications, collaborations, trainings, and opportunities with Space Grant institutions in support of recruitment of TCU and AIANSI students.

Assist in developing communications, collaborations, trainings, and opportunities with TCUs and AIANSIs in planning, designing and implementing teacher preparation and in-service programs that improve the quality and increase diversity of STEM educator workforce.

Assist, coordinate and support new and current STEM engagement projects, events, and activities to engage and increase TCUs and other tribal serving institutions participation in NASA STEM opportunities.

Engagement planning, scheduling and activities with higher education institutions and agencies to include face to face meetings, distance collaboration, official event planning and coordination with complimentary Agency activities.

Maintains communications with State Space Grant Consortia as appropriate, adherence to White House and Congressional mandates and align activities with Office of STEM Engagement Initiatives in concert with the applicable NASA Mission Directorates.

Manage TCU and Native Serving listserv, content of the MAIANSE website and, interface with the NASA IT service provider contract for maintenance of the site, if applicable.

Develop and present activity reports, presentations and status as required.

Required Deliverables or Delivery Schedule:

Submission of STEM engagement monthly reports due 1st Thursday each month, summarizing accomplishments and forecasting work activity to GSFC/MAIANSE Lead, for use by GSFC Office of STEM engagement Director and Deputy Director.

MUREP-MAIANSE reporting requirements, data collections, schedules, agendas, and research as assigned.

Conference planning, coordination and support for MAIANSE related events

MAIANSE Project Activity Plan and associated task lists are updated regularly and as required.

Reports to SciAct as required by SciAct Director

 
Position Requirements

Minimum Technical Qualifications

Microsoft Office:  Knowledgeable and experienced in daily application of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Navigating Database Software systems: Knowing how to use database software to find record, sort, review, edit, print, and other functions. Knowing how to use built-in forms and reports in a database. Exploring the software and learning various functions and features.

Data Integrity. Understanding definitions, program guidelines, and sources of data.

Database Design and Planning. Understanding database design concepts, benefits, and limitations for short-term and long-term planning.

Customer Service:  Personable, organized, strong communications orally and written, time management, prioritizing, flexible, willingness to learn.

Writing Skills:  Strong writing skills including grammar, punctuation, spelling, editing, proofreading, audience, format, composition, and style.

Other Preferred Skills

Strong analytical, communications, and technical writing skills
