Description

Perform technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in the administration of highway construction. Areas include, but are not limited to, construction inspection, project roadway/structure inspection, materials testing, project surveying, and program/regulatory compliance. Prepare inspection reports and other documentation, make field measurements and properly document quantities for pay applications in accordance with DOT procedures and policies. Interpret plans and contract documents to determine contractor compliance with contract specifications.

Duties Include:

  • Testing of materials; review of plans; analysis of engineering-related data; and construction survey/layout.
  • Keeping daily diaries on project operations, resolves daily constructability issues and trouble shoots problems to mitigate delays to contractor’s progress
  • Monitors contractor's daily operations and performs and/or reviews test reports to ensure that all work and materials conform to specifications, plans and contractual provisions. Also monitors utility relocation efforts by inspecting and tracking relocation work
  • Anticipates contractual problems and advises supervisor of the need for plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments to improve safety, timely delivery and/or quality of delivered product.
  • Effectively communicates and coordinates work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners to minimize delays and disturbances while maximizing progress of the projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret roadway and structure plans for compliance, contract specifications, apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles.
  • Perform required field inspections, maintain detailed records and reports, and communicate effectively with the owner team, contractor personnel, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports.
  • Manage and direct several inspectors on various phases of construction.
  • Ability to work independently and/or provide assistance to other field personnel.
  • Familiarity with DOT field management systems.
  • Maintains clean equipment, vehicles and work areas.
  • Assists other inspectors, technicians or professional staff on tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to work day or night shifts and/or flexible schedules as required.
 
Position Requirements
  • Experience with Inspection or Construction of Highway Concrete Paving
  • Experience with Structures Inspection and Concrete Sampling & Testing
  • Erosion and sediment control certification and experience
  • Current DOT certifications – Asphalt, Earthwork, Concrete, and Nuclear Density Gauge.
  • If currently hold other DOT certifications in soils, concrete or asphalt, must have ability to get required DOT certifications within first 6 months of start date.
  • High School Diploma Required, AAS Civil Engineering Technology preferred.

 

  • 2+ years of construction related experience
  • A degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Civil Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university may be substituted for experience.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, twist or stoop frequently and for prolonged periods, under various outside conditions.
  • Ability to reach horizontally as well as vertically for required tasks.
  • Ability to use construction or inspection safety equipment including fall protection.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and shake up to 20 pounds.
  • Knowledge of survey crew techniques, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
  • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and /or construction surveying.
  • Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
  • Experience with contract administration.
