About the Museum

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures -- located in the historic May Company building in the Miracle Mile neighborhood of Los Angeles, next to LACMA and the Page Museum and across from the Petersen Museum- will be the world's premier institution devoted to exploring the art and science of movies and moviemaking. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the museum will consist of a major renovation to the historic 1930s May Company building plus a soaring spherical addition that will house a 1,000-seat theater. Visitors to the museum will experience the magic of cinema and the creative, collaborative process of filmmaking. The Academy Museum will feature six stories of dynamic spaces, including more than 50,000 square feet of immersive exhibition galleries, a state-of-the-art education studio, two film and performance theaters, a restaurant and café, and dynamic public and special event spaces.

Job Summary

Reporting to Chief Operating Officer (COO) and as part of the founding museum team, the IT Director manages, coordinates, and handles all IT operations, programs, and projects for the museum, and works both independently and collaboratively to ensure that the museum's needs are met and its technology systems run efficiently and without interruption. The IT Director works in close collaboration and consultation with the IT team at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as well as with all levels of staff across all departments and program areas, outside vendors and contractors. Under the direction of the COO, he IT Director is responsible for proactively planning, developing, and implementing the museum's IT goals, identifying technology priorities, projects, and budgets for the museum. The IT Director works with and provides support for all museum specific systems, and primary areas of responsibility are user and desktop support and management, network and systems administration, planning and operations, and project management and execution.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function to a high professional standard. The ideal candidate will be an extremely organized and efficient IT project portfolio manager with excellent communication skills. The ability to juggle many competing priorities, allocate resources accurately and efficiently, and communicate transparently to all stakeholders is imperative.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Manage the design, implementation, testing, or of the new museums technology infrastructure (software, networks, systems, telecommunication, etc.)
• Manage the upgrade, and maintenance of the organization's existing technology infrastructure in collaboration with the AMPAS IT team
• Evaluate and assess new technology projects based upon size, complexity, and time frame
• Implement new technologies to increase efficiency or improve performance
• Manage contracts and agreements with Service Providers, equipment vendors and suppliers
• Responsible for making decisions on the procurement of all IT equipment
• Develop and maintain annual plan and department budgets to include personnel and operation expenses
• Implement and oversee troubleshooting for Security systems, system backups and disaster recovery plans
• Provide and oversee desktop user assistance troubleshooting hardware & software (laptops, monitors, mobile and other external devices), help install and configure workstations and peripherals.
• Communicate, when necessary, technical concepts to staff in a non-technical environment
• Work as part of a team to prepare and install IT and A/V equipment and software for exhibitions.
• Reviews exhibition designs with media & interactive components and determines technology control requirements.
• Writes custom scripts, driver software and OS-based batch files to allow external control of A/V and electronic media art equipment.
• Assist as needed in the support of kiosk interactives, exhibition displays, networking equipment and other exhibition or fine-art objects that interact with IT systems or networks
• Manage public and private museum wide WiFi networks and any communication systems that use WiFi
• Oversee ticketing and retail systems including POS and ticketing systems and support website and mobile applications as needed.

 
Position Requirements

• Five or more years of experience in providing a full range of IT support, coordination, and management in a museum or other cultural institution.
• Demonstrated ability as a senior IT supervisor, with experience overseeing staff, broad systems experience, network management, help desk support, and budget management, and strong knowledge of emerging museum technologies.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, engineering, mathematics, information technology, or equivalent experience in technical services.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows 7/8/10 including the command prompt, registry, and scripting
• Extensive experience in installing, maintaining and upgrading Windows Servers domain management
• Excellent technical skills and demonstrated troubleshooting and repairing abilities, with strong knowledge of IT systems, applications, and hardware, and hands-on experience with computer networks, network administration, network installation, and LAN/WAN configuration.
• Solid understanding of network security including NTFS permissions, Group Policies, WAP, WEP, Cisco and advance Firewall management
• Advanced knowledge of setting up and troubleshooting TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, SNMP, POP3, NAT, etc.
• Strong knowledge of computer networking, database and web-application technologies and other concepts
• Proven ability to work with technical vendors, suppliers, and contractors.
• Exceptionally proactive, accountable, and adaptable attitude towards responsibilities, and highly professional and positive attitude in a dynamic and creative setting
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently, while taking direction and communicating effectively.
