About the Organization The Children's Law Center (CLC) is a non-profit organization that represents children in custody, visitation, guardianship, paternity, family offense, and related child protective (abuse or neglect) proceedings in the Family Courts and the Integrated Domestic Violence Parts of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and in appeals therefrom. CLC represents over 5,000 children annually in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, providing holistic and zealous representation and support in the Court, the community and the legislature.

The mission of CLC is to provide children with a strong and effective voice in legal proceedings through providing outstanding legal and social work services.  
Description

Under the direction of the Director of Paralegal and Volunteer Services, the Paralegal will work in a team environment to assist with case preparation. This can include: interviewing clients, preparing and filing court documents, assisting with writing assignments and performing legal research on law-related matters. The Paralegal will also perform other legal administrative tasks such as scheduling meetings and conferences, filing, copying, answering phones and other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Accurately following CLC practices and procedures, the Paralegal will:

  • Use a referral process to assist with case and trial preparation;
  • Research, obtain, digest/outline case records (e.g. medical, criminal history, school, etc.);
  • Prepare legal documents including subpoenas, stipulation agreements and correspondence;
  • Proofread legal documents;
  • Conduct follow up interviews and information gathering under the direction of the attorney and/or his/her supervisor;
  • If necessary and in collaboration with other CLC team members locate and refer clients for identified or requested services;
  • Prepare written reports summarizing information compiled for a CLC team member;
  • Obtain and copy court files;
  • When necessary serve subpoenas and other legal documents;
  • In conjunction with the Administrative Assistant, assemble court files and materials for trial/appeal/stays/writs;
  • Assist litigants with completing forms and releases;
  • Participate on team projects; and
  • Perform other duties as requested and assigned.


Secondary Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide backup reception relief as needed.
 
Position Requirements

The Ideal Candidates Will Posess The Following Key Competencies and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field; Paralegal certificate from ABA accredited school; or a minimum of two years of related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in research (law or related topics).
  • Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn new skills continuously grow professionally and take an optimistic approach to new challenges.
  • Efficient, persistent; and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Sophisticated user of software, technology, and online resources including knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, social networking sites, and databases.
  • Excellent judgment, diplomacy, and a strategic thinker.
  • Ability to exercise complete discretion when working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Desire to work in a busy organization that represents children.
  • Interest in working with and coaching interns, students, or volunteers.
  • Knowledge of Family and Supreme Court custody, visitation domestic violence, child protective, civil or criminal procedure law preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English desired, but not required.
