About the Organization The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston's first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

Since 1924, Houston SPCA has been the leading private, nonprofit animal welfare organization in the greater Houston region. Receiving no governmental funding, we rely upon the community's support to achieve our goals of improving and protecting the lives of animals in our community and alleviating their suffering and abuse.

Primary Purpose:
We are seeking a dynamic individual with exceptional writing skills to join our team as a Development Writer. In this role, you will be responsible for crafting compelling narratives and materials to support our fundraising and development efforts. The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to convey our organization's mission and impact through various channels. This person will write and proofread correspondence, newsletters, impact reports, grants, and other collateral material for the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Development Officer, development staff, and other appropriate parties. Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer, the Development Writer works collaboratively with communications professionals and fundraising staff to develop persuasive case prospectuses and proposals, craft presidential correspondence, interview stakeholders and donors, write compelling stories and marketing content and complete other communication projects as time allows.

Essential Functions

  • Produce high-quality written content for fundraising appeals, grants, donor communications, annual reports, newsletters, and other development materials.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop persuasive project proposals, case statements, and funding requests for individual donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
  • Identify and amplify impactful stories that highlight the achievements and impact of our programs and initiatives.
  • Support donor stewardship efforts by creating personalized thank-you letters, impact reports, and other communications to acknowledge donor contributions and cultivate ongoing support.
  • Conduct research on donor prospects, fundraising trends, and best practices to inform development strategies and messaging.
  • Work closely with animal care teams, leadership, cruelty investigators, and external partners to gather information and insights for development writing projects.
  • Ensure consistency in messaging and branding across all development materials, maintaining alignment with organizational values and goals.
  • Protect all confidential information, including donors, clients, animals, and internal communications.
  • Participate in special projects as directed by the Chief Development Officer.
  • Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.

Grant Coordination

  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals to various foundations, corporations, and government agencies in alignment with organizational priorities and funding opportunities.
  • Manage the grant application process from start to finish, including tracking deadlines, coordinating with team members for required documentation, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
  • Identify new funding opportunities by researching potential grant sources, analyzing their alignment with organizational goals, and maintaining a database of potential funders.
  • Prepare timely and accurate reports for grantors, highlighting program achievements, outcomes, and financial accountability.
  • Ensure adherence to grant requirements, regulations, and reporting deadlines to maintain positive relationships with funders and uphold organizational integrity.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term grant funding strategies, including identifying areas for growth, diversification of funding sources, and sustainability planning.
 
Position Requirements
  • Passion for the mission of the Houston SPCA and the Wildlife Center of Texas.
  • Bachelor's degree in business or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities successfully.
  • Capacity to synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
  • Experience with managing projects to specifications and to meet expected deadlines.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional writing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong data management and reporting ability.
  • Sensitivity to and respect for the privacy rights of donors in all communications.
  • Must professionally represent the Houston SPCA with the public, donors, volunteers, and staff.
  • Capable of responding to multiple demands concurrently with excellent accuracy, and quality.
  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day; able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Regular office schedule, occasionally requiring availability during evening and weekend events. (This is not a remote or hybrid position)
  • Occasional exposure to animals and related issues.
  • Must be insurable under the organization’s auto insurance policy and have a valid Texas driver’s license.
