Description

Salary - $17.87 per hour

Definition:  Performs custodial and light maintenance of the South Bend Police Department Facility and related work as assigned.

Supervision Exercised:  Not Applicable.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them.
  • Clean office spaces throughout the building.
  • Gather and empty trash and pick up litter, trash, and other debris from in and around the building.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water, using commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Accept deliveries as needed and ensure they are taken to proper person/area of the building
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors and checking electrical appliance usage to ensure that hazards are not created.
  • Move furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks and driveways using snow blowers, snow shovels, or other snow clearing tool, and spread snow melting chemicals.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
  • Spray insecticides and fumigants to prevent insect and rodent infestation.
  • General outdoor landscaping such as plant maintenance, weeding, and trimming
  •  Performs all other related general custodial or maintenance duties as required.

Knowlege and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform strenuous work in extremely adverse weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning supplies, contents contained, and proper use of cleaning supplies.
  • Ability to learn routine tasks quickly and to follow oral instructions;
  • Ability to maintain and keep building, lawns and parking lot clean and orderly;
  • Ability to perform strenuous work such as moving furniture, equipment, supplies, and snow shoveling.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate public appearance and to deal tactfully and congenially with public and other staff.
  • Must be dependable and punctual.
  •  Basic knowledge of the software programs used by the Police Department and the City of South Bend.

Tools Used: Must be able to use a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, simple cleaning tools such as mops, brooms, vacuum cleaners, rakes, and shovels. Other tools may include snow blowers, floor buffers, carpet extraction equipment and lift devices such as pallet jacks.

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work in high areas using ladders and lifts. Must be able to work in confined spaces and in changing weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
