Description

Job Summary:

The Supplemental Instructor is responsible for facilitating weekly group review sessions for students in ENG 101, MAT 101, and other designated courses. This position attends all class sessions for designated course(s) and is familiar with all course assignments as well as prepares materials for weekly group review sessions, models successful student behavior and learning strategies, focuses on “how to learn” as well as “what to learn”, and keeps accurate records of all sessions as stipulated by grant requirements and the needs of the Walker Center for Academic Excellence (WCAE). Additionally, the Supplemental Instructor meets with the Associate Dean of Student Support Services.

This position is visible to the College community and routinely interacts with students, faculty, and Walker Center for Academic Excellence staff.

Essential Functions Operations:

  • Facilitates review of course content through guided discussion and activities and assists students in developing affecting learning and study strategies pertinent for success in the course.

  • Identifies students’ academic needs and challenges and offers reinforcement or strategies that maximize students’ academic success.

  • Maintains accurate records of meetings with students.

  • Attends mandatory orientation, training, meetings, and professional development sessions.

  • Provides general office support as needed.

  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

Direct Supervisory Responsibilities:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and equivalent experience in the areas of tutoring and/or supplemental instruction.

  • Demonstrated level of knowledge in supplemental instruction as well as documented grade(s) of A- or better in appointed subject(s).

  • Willingness to seek ongoing professional development in the areas of developmental education, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and adult learners.

  • Demonstrated ability to:

  • Display tact and skill in effectively communicating ideas and knowledge effectively;

  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality with all aspects of the job duties; and,

  • Support the College's Mission, particularly in administering the responsibilities of the Department.

  • Proficiency in Windows operating environment; current Microsoft Office Suite products; Google applications and Zoom, or similar applications preferred.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Sitting for extended periods of time with the ability to stand as needed for comfort.

  • Regular use of the computer and phone for most aspects of the job duties.

  • May involve frequent contact with various members of the College.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a virtual position. Internet access required.

  • Work hours may change based on the needs of the College. Hours can range between 10-15 hours per week.

  • Evening and weekends may be required in support of student needs, events, and activities.
