Description

JOB SUMMARY: A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices both autonomously and in collaboration with a variety of health providers on the interprofessional team to deliver high-quality, holistic, evidence-based anesthesia and pain care services. The CRNA cares for patients at all acuity levels across the lifespan in a variety of settings for procedures including, but not limited to, surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and pain management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Perform a comprehensive history and physical examination, assessment, and evaluation preprocedural and preoperative.
  • Implement a patient specific plan of care which may involve anesthetic techniques such as general, regional, and local anesthesia, sedation, and multimodal pain management.
  • Conduct post anesthesia evaluation.
  • Collaborate with the patient and variety of healthcare professionals in order to provide patient centered high-quality, evidence-based care.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages patients’ airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endotracheal intubation and extubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, and respiratory therapy.
  • Selects, prepares, or uses equipment, monitors, supplies, or drugs for the administration of anesthetics.
  • Selects, orders, and administers anesthetics, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products.
  • Performs pre-anesthetic screenings including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and documents results.
  • Monitors patients’ responses including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output using invasive and noninvasive techniques.
  • Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Develops anesthesia care plans.
  • Obtains informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures.
  • Assesses patients’ medical histories to predict anesthesia response.
  • Performs and evaluates the results of diagnostic tests such as radiographs (x-rays) and electrocardiograms (EKGs).
  • Performs or manages regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks.
  • Evaluates patients’ post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur.
  • Administers post-anesthesia medications or fluids to support patients’ cardiovascular systems.
  • Discharges patients from post-anesthesia care.
  • Reads literature, talks with colleagues, and participates in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing.
  • Provides education to the clinical team on anesthesia care, complications, and emergency responses.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with various clinical staff and other disciplines.

Position Requirements

MANDATORY LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

The following licenses/certifications are require:

CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:

  • Holds current active state licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Indiana.
  • Master’s Degree in nursing with specific emphasis on anesthesia.
  • Graduate of a nurse anesthesia educational program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Program.
  • Is currently certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
  • Advanced Cardio-Pulmonary Life Support
  • Basic Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation Protocol
  • NBCRNA Certification
  • Privileges at assigned work locations

ADDITIONAL LICENSURE/CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities as deemed necessary by Hancock Health including but not limited to Obstetrical Anesthesia and Endoscopy Procedures
  • At least five (5) years’ experience

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • ASN required, BSN Preferred
  • Basic life support
  • Purpose, use, and care of physiological monitors relating to the administration of anesthesia
  • Ethic and legal issues and responsibilities
  • Fire, electrical, laser, and explosion hazards in the operating room and other anesthesia related areas
  • Structure, function, and care of all components of anesthesia delivery systems
  • Sterile technique and the principles of aseptic practice
  • Usage of common anesthetic gases
  • Type and indications for local, monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia
  • Principles of purchasing and supply levels
  • Communication skills
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience in Surgical Services.
  • Mandatory Annual Continuing Education: Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Confidentiality-HIPAA, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance. Annual Unit Specific Competencies, and any education required by Regulatory Accreditation Agencies, Scope of Practice, and/or Hancock Regional Hospital.
