Want to Make a Difference this Summer


The Houston SPCA is currently seeking certified Teachers for our Summer Critter Camp program for Campers entering 3rd grade through 8th grade on our campus. The weekly day camps will be held from June 3 through August 2, 2024; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Carruth Education Center located at 7007 Old Katy Road, Houston, TX 77024. Positions are available to qualified Teachers who can commit to at least 3 weeks of camp and preference will be given to those who can accept additional sessions.

Each weekly session will have three teams in addition to a Camp Manager. Each team will be responsible for a group of around 20 Campers, including lunch supervision and visits with the adoptable animals. Teachers and TAs will rotate and present various lessons and lead activities. They will also be required to take on duties that relate to planning, organizing, and maintaining an appropriate environment for each camp. Camp staff will have assistance from Interns and Critter Crew (high school volunteers).

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Supervises and teaches humane education programs to various grade levels during various sessions.
  • Committed to providing Campers a fun, safe and welcoming environment.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about teaching students who are eager to learn about animal welfare.
  • Excellent communication skills and can clearly communicate effectively with both Campers and their parents/guardians.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, or related discipline, preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience as a certified teacher in a classroom or camp environment.
  • Ability to work with students in grades 3rd through 8th.
  • Must have previous experience working with children and youth leading and facilitating in a group setting.
  • A comfort level around domestic animals.
  • Ability to represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, patience, courtesy, and work well under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day; able to lift uplift up to 25 pounds.
