Geneva College is a Christian liberal arts college in the reformed tradition located about 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1848 by the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, Geneva has majors in both liberal arts and pre-professional programs, and offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Geneva's faculty provide a challenging education that prepares students for careers, for further education, and for life. In all fields of study, students are challenged to explore the implications of the Christian faith on their discipline. Geneva has approximately 1,350 students enrolled in its various programs taught by its faculty of nearly 70 members. The college seeks to prepare students to serve Christ and the world in all areas of society, including work, family, and the church. Geneva is a founding member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU).

Description

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified.

 

Summary of Responsibilities: As the lead voice of the College in all marketing and communication efforts, the Director is responsible for maintaining and communicating Geneva’s Brand Promise, “Through purposeful learning in a community reflecting the full spectrum of God's kingdom, a Geneva College experience inspires students to discover a faith-life calling in service to God and neighbor”. The Director is responsible for ensuring that all marketing, media, communication, and social media efforts represent the best of Geneva across all our constituencies. The Director gives daily supervision and direction to a team of creative talent and communication experts and is responsible for developing annual marketing and communications plans as well as multi-year campaigns. The Director collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and internal departments to craft the perfect message for prospective students, athletic groups, alumni, donors, parents, churches, media, government officials and the public. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Direct institutional communication efforts:
    1. Develop institutional framework for storytelling based on Geneva’s brand promise.
    2. Develop and manage ongoing communication strategy to promote Geneva in communication and media outlets.
    3. Develop a proactive media relations program to build relationships with media representatives, research and identify news on campus, and regularly and consistently inform media of significant occurrences and manage all media appearances.
    4. Write, edit and/or approve all stories, news releases, and announcements.
    5. Supervise planning, creation and production of all printed material including viewbooks, brochures, flyers, postcards, the President’s Report and Geneva Magazine.
    6. Support the AVP Strategic Partnerships and the President to manage crisis communications and messaging.
    7. Partner with Sports Information Director to ensure consistency in strategy, communications content, and quality of communications for Geneva Athletics.
  2. Direct institutional marketing efforts:
    1. Develop, manage, and implement institutional integrated marketing plan rooted in the Brand Promise that ensures that the right content reaches the right audience at the right time.
    2. Oversees institutional brand identity. Including adherence to visual guidelines, messaging hierarchies, advertising templates, identity standards, and content stylebook.
    3. Establishing an annual, digital first, marketing strategy that prioritizes the Geneva college value proposition in front of relevant target audiences.
    4. Supervise content development. Including directing the writing, graphic design, photo, and video staff as part of an overall strategy to promote Geneva College with high quality and consistent messaging and identity.
    5. Manage all activity related to advertising partners and their output including an assessment of their annual performance.
  3. Support the college in the managing of communications and content development:
    1. Partner with the President’s office on the communication needs for the development of strategic partnerships and community relations.
    2. Support enrollment and the Admissions Communications Specialist in the development of content and marketing materials for annual admissions communication cycle
    3. Support the Geneva College Foundation in establishing a cohesive annual communication calendar across all media and different audiences.
    4. Support other departments and individuals in developing high quality and appropriately branded marketing materials and communications.
  4. Leadership and Supervision:
    1. The Director of Marketing and Communication serves as a key leader of the Enrollment and Marketing Division leadership team and advises the Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing on strategy and direction.
    2. The Director provides leadership to the Marketing and Communications team by creating a stable and challenging work environment that enables the team to consistently succeed in its targets.
    3. Supervise regular employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning/directing work, coaching, evaluating performance, affirming, disciplining, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
    4. Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.
  5. Miscellaneous:
    1. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Enrollment and Marketing.

Job Requirements - Administrative:

  1. General: Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed or are able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations in order to safely perform the essential responsibilities of the job.
  2. Physical: Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.
  3. Confidentiality: Individuals must recognize that management of data, including personal information, grades, budgets, programs, and policies is necessary to the operation of the College. Such information must be kept private and confidential for the protection of the College and to obey Federal and/or State laws. Should there be doubt as to whether a certain matter is to be protected, it should be discussed with your supervisor before making a disclosure.
  4. Mental: Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Minimum:
    1. Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or related field.
    2. Experience: Five years of progressive experience in marketing or public relations.
    3. Skill/Abilities: Understanding of principles and practices of public relations, graphic standards, web practices, journalistic writing and content, and best practices in social media. Must have a basic proficiency of office software. Must be strong in relationship building and supervisory ability and be able to manage multiple events at a time and prioritize tasks. Must be a persuasive communicator with strong written and oral skills, have a great ability to work well with others. Must be able to problem solve, reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make projections and judgments, work at a fast pace of productivity, and delegate responsibilities.
    4. Christian Commitment: Eligible candidates must be thoughtful and articulate Christians and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to candidates who support and have an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. The individual must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
  2. Preferred:
    1. Education/Certification: Master’s degree in business, communications, public relations, or related field.
    2. Experience: Seven years of progressive experience in marketing or public relations, specifically in higher education, and specifically supervising a staff.
    3. Skill/Abilities: Understanding the challenges of Christian higher education today, and understanding Geneva College, its organization and community.
