This is a seasonal full-time position for six months. No benefits, position will start mid-April.

 

SUPERVISION:

Non-supervisory.

 

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

Locate, identify, and treat noxious weeds throughout Garfield County. Communicate with landowners and educate the public on noxious weed identification, plant ecology, land and natural resource management.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Field & Site Noxious Weed Mitigation:

  • Operates and maintains spray vehicles and equipment.
  • Mixes, loads, and applies herbicides daily.
  • Utilizes GPS devices to help identify, locate, and record instances of noxious weed infestations.
  • Interprets and applies state and Federal guidelines concerning the safe use of pesticides, weed management methods, and personal safety.
  • Completes daily herbicide application record.
  • Monitors the progress of treated areas.
  • Interacts with and disseminates information to the internal staff and the public in a professional, courteous and friendly manner.
  • Observes safety precautions and wears appropriate safety equipment at all times.
  • Uses and maintains County property in a safe and professional manner.
  • Reviews all work products to ensure highest level of quality.
  • Drives vehicle to perform one or more essential functions.
  • Performs other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as determined by Garfield County may be substituted for the following requirements.)

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: No experience required.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Valid Driver’s License.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Natural Resource Management or related field OR Coursework in Vegetation Management, Environmental Sciences, or Ecology preferred OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in local invasive plant identification or pesticide application; Colorado Department of Agriculture Commercial Applicator Certification preferred.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

REQUIRED PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Lifting/Carrying: Capable of lifting and transporting equipment and materials used in vegetation management tasks, with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds using correct lifting techniques.
  • Bending/Stooping: Able to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and occasionally crouch and crawl, while maintaining body balance and equilibrium.
  • Grasping/Manipulating: Proficient in using dexterous hand movements for handling tools, equipment, and controls, with frequent use of hand and finger motions for grasping, holding, picking, pinching, and operating objects.
  • Reaching: Ability to reach overhead, forward, and below waist level to operate controls within a vehicle or access tools and equipment.
  • Seeing: Possess specific vision abilities including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, for assessing vegetation conditions and navigating terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Hearing: Must have adequate hearing for communication with team members and detecting potential hazards in the field.
  • Walking/Standing: Comfortable with frequent standing and walking during fieldwork, including walking or hiking on uneven and rocky terrain while wearing a backpack sprayer weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Climbing: Occasionally required to climb, balance, and maintain body balance while ascending or descending ladders or open stairs.
  • Sitting/Driving: Capable of frequently sitting and driving for extended periods while maintaining focus and alertness, and occasionally required to maintain body balance while driving on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Pushing/Pulling: Able to maneuver equipment, and materials, including pushing or pulling heavy objects or trailers as necessary.
  • Physical Stamina: Maintain endurance for outdoor work, repetitive tasks, and prolonged driving periods, adapting to varying environmental conditions and work demands.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold, and to construction equipment and debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles, and dust. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of bodily injury from electrical shock or mechanical hazard. The employee frequently works in and around ongoing construction; and occasionally in high, precarious places; and is often exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

The employee is required to wear safety equipment to perform most of the essential functions of this job. The employee often works at remote work-site locations.

The noise level is typically loud and may occasionally be extremely loud.

WORK HOURS:

  • Hours are typically 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
  • There may be times when an employee may need to work outside the established work week, such as after hours or on the weekend during a county emergency or disaster.

REQUIRED TRAVEL:

The employee is frequently required to drive in all-weather conditions to work sites in various locations throughout the County.

TECHNOLOGY AND EQUIPMENT:

A variety of light equipment, machinery and tools used in weed and pest control.

Computer and relevant software applications. Telephone and other communications systems.
