JOB SUMMARY:         Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in maintenance of the grounds and gardens surrounding the facility, assuring the beauty and safety of residents, visitors and staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:  Include the following; other duties may be assigned. 

 

Serve as supervisor on the grounds, assisting other gardeners with training and/or questions, and assuring safety compliance.

           

Plan landscaping tasks, and instructs workers in taking care of watering, lawn mowing, raking, general clean up, irrigation, planting of flowers, and transplanting and pruning of trees, shrubbery, and repair of irrigation.

           

Instruct staff in the use gasoline/electrical power tools such as drills, mowers and blowers, as well as hand tools including shovels, rakes, hammers, saws, wrenches, pliers and cutters.

           

Perform all duties in a quiet and orderly manner, bearing in mind at all times the sleep, comfort and satisfaction of all residents.

           

Interpret policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.

 

Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.

 

Analyze and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.

 

Maintain time and production records.

 

Use equipment and materials in a safe and acceptable manner, follows established safety procedures, uses appropriate safeguards, and observes common sense rules of safety in all on-the-job activities.

           

Conduct self in a manner, which reflects credit on Carmel Valley Manor and encourages others to do the same.

 

Assist in the residents’ garden throughout the year.

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:          To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:  Must possess High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience; up to five years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  College degree in Ornamental Horticulture preferred.  Supervisory experience is a must. 

 

Must have a current California Pesticide Applicator License.

 

Knowledge of intermediate to advanced computer skills in Word and Excel.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

 

REASONING SKILLS:  Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

 

Must possess the ability to work harmoniously with and supervise personnel.

The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
