Description

This position is managed by:  Director of Animal Care and Adoptions

Primary Purpose:

  • Responsible for the coordination and supervision of the Care Specialist Team at the Houston SPCA, including oversight of adoption programs, companion animal husbandry, & client assistance.
  • Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Assist the Director of Animal Care and Adoptions in the coordination of Care specialists and daily operations.
  • Instruct, train, and assist staff with their duties and use of equipment and materials in assigned areas.
  • Interface with all department managers within the Houston SPCA.
  • Maintain companion animal product inventory.
  • Assist the Director of Animal Care and Adoptions with staff and procedural scheduling.
  • Quality control of all procedures.
  • Assist staff with initial customer questions and/or issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist as directed in the counseling of Care Specialists concerning performance and development.
  • Assure that procedures are followed and maintained according to Houston SPCA policy, including sanitization, companion animal husbandry, adoption processes, and rehoming processes.
  • Assist as directed by the Director of Animal Care and Adoptions with interviewing and selection of applicants.
  • Assist in the management and operation of specialty adoption programs and events.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures as needed.
  • Responsible for entering accurate information regarding customers and animals into the database.
  • Update the Director of Animal Care and Adoptions on areas of interest and/or concern.
  • Ensure all companion animal and adoption areas are clean, safe, and organized for the public, staff, volunteers and animals within the Houston SPCA’s care.
  • Opening and/or closing duties of the shelter.
  • Provide information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Advise potential adopters of Houston SPCA adoption benefits, policies and procedures.
  • Protect all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications.
  • Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill, and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years of previous supervisory experience. 
  • Min of 5+ years’ work experience.
  • Follow the mission of the Houston SPCA.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Houston SPCA adoption policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Houston SPCA partners and the products/services they offer.
  • Knowledge of the Houston SPCA policies and protocols, such as, but not limited to, rehoming, cleaning, and medical protocols.
  • Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
  • Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness.
  • Ability to represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player.
  • Must be patient and courteous and work well under stressful conditions.
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
  • A valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record are optimum.
  • Ability to work unscheduled hours.
  • Must be able to safely lift 50lb, carry, and push and pull heavy objects, with or without assistance.
