If yes, then we have an amazing opportunity for a Competent Professional Authority in our WIC department located at our New Haven Medical Center at 58144 Gratiot Avenue, New Haven, MI 

This position provides nutrition counseling, training and education services to WIC program participants and staff.

General responsibilities

  • Perform nutrition assessment using anthropometric and hematological data to determine client nutritional risk and program eligibility.
  • Assess health, diet, and breastfeeding history to determine client concerns and need for services.
  • Provide client-centered nutrition risk and eligibility education, including breastfeeding encouragement and support. Develop a nutrition education plan based on client concerns.
  • Confirm that all certification criteria have been met and document in the WIC record meeting all Federal, State, and Local Agency criteria.
  • Prescribe WIC food package benefits with approvals as needed, including non-contract formula requests.
  • Request local agency RD or MDHHS approval for WIC food packages that require qualifying conditions.
  • Appropriately make referrals to nutrition, breastfeeding, health, public assistance, and community services.
  • Initiate problem lists for high-risk clients and refer them to a Registered Dietitian for individual counseling and care plan development.
  • Provide care plan follow-up and documentation as assigned.
  • Perform anthropometric measurements and lab functions as needed.
  • Participate in the development, selection, and evaluation of nutrition education materials.
  • Promote and maintain awareness/knowledge of Agency and community resources, services, and activities.
  • Provide consultation, training, and supervision for staff as requested.
  • Assist in the development of WIC Local Agency policies and procedures.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences, as needed, and approved for professional development on behalf of WIC and Community First Health Centers.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

This is a full time opportunity; 40 hours per week.

Hours will be gained Monday thru Friday; 830a-5p and may include a late night and/or Saturday rotation.

Position Requirements

Education and/or Experience

The WIC CPA shall possess one of the following credentials: Physician, Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN), Nutritionist (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, dietetics or Public Health Nutrition), Physician’s Assistant (certified by the National Committee on Certification of Physician’s Assistants or certified by the State medical certifying authority), Registered Nurse (RN), Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR) (emphasis in community/clinical nutrition) or Home Economist (Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in nutrition).

At least one year experience of providing community health, pediatric and or/maternal/infant nutrition services preferred.

  • General computer proficiency with knowledge of Windows-based software.
  • Must understand Age-Specific Care
  • Must maintain Basic Life Support certification.
