Job Summary

The Pittsburgh Pirates are seeking a senior software engineer with expertise in data infrastructure for machine learning. This position, which is open to remote, local, or hybrid work arrangements, requires hands-on experience in ingesting, processing, warehousing, and distributing structured and unstructured data, including TB size datasets. Responsibilities:

  1. Build and manage data pipelines, ensuring real-time distribution of baseball data.
  2. Oversee the health of the data platform year-round, including during the off-season.
  3. Build and deploy machine learning models to curate and clean data, ensuring high data quality and integrity.
  4. Design, code, test, and deploy new datasets, as well as enhance and fix existing ones.
  5. Conduct thorough code reviews to ensure code quality, adherence to best practices, and scalability.
  6. Troubleshoot and communicate data ingestion and quality issues to stakeholders.
  7. Support analysts in Baseball R&D with the productionalization and maintenance of predictive models.
  8. Provide in-game support for users during the baseball season, sometimes during non-standard work hours.
  9. Track and report on operating metrics to monitor data platform performance.
 
Position Requirements

Required:

  1. Authorized to work lawfully in the United States.
  2. Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science or a related field.
  3. 3+ years of experience in software engineering, with expertise in data infrastructure for machine learning.
  4. Strong experience in ingesting, processing, and distributing large-scale structured and unstructured data sets, including TB size datasets.
  5. Ability to provide prompt support and resolution for data issues, while establishing processes for future problem prevention.
  6. Familiarity with at least one of the following popular cloud data vendors, such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  7. Working knowledge of infrastructure frameworks, including CICD, Airflow, and Git.
  8. Proficiency in Python, SQL, and Linux.
  9. Willingness to adhere to coding practices and follow team guidelines.
  10. Strong analytical skills and ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Desired:

  1. Expertise in building and deploying machine learning models for data curation.
  2. Experience with hybrid cloud technologies.
  3. Prior experience in or knowledge of baseball is a plus.
