General Summary:

Under the supervision of the District Court Administrator, serves in a quasi-judicial capacity as prescribed by statute and court rule. Magisterial duties include conducting bond hearings in felony and misdemeanor cases, and issuing arrest, blood alcohol and search warrants.

Essential Functions:

  1. Accepts and examines criminal complaints and examines witnesses, as necessary, in order to determine probable cause for issuing arrest warrants as authorized by the Prosecuting Attorney.
     
  2. Accepts and examines affidavits for search warrants from law enforcement officers. Upon determining probable cause, issues search warrants.
     
  3. Sets or denies bail in criminal matters based on seriousness of charge, likelihood of court appearance, and other relevant factors. May set conditions for bond, or commit accused persons to jail in lieu of bail.
     
  4. Conducts jail arraignments for individuals not making bond.
     
  5. Provides information to attorneys, law enforcement officers, defendants and others about court policies and procedures, case status, scheduling of court proceedings and criminal proceedings in general.
     
  6. Regularly serves in an on-call status for issuance of search and arrest warrants and setting bond.
     
  7. Serves as a LEIN operator for the court, includes overseeing and participating in entering and canceling warrants and bond conditions from LEIN.
     
  8. Keeps abreast of changes in technology, legal developments, new administrative techniques and current issues through continued education and professional growth. Attends conferences, workshops, and seminars if so directed.
     
  9. Performs other duties as required.

Position Requirements

Employment Qualifications:

 

Education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, criminal law or closely related field providing a foundation for making determinations as to reasonable doubt, probable cause, and preponderance of evidence. Preferred not required. 

 

Experience:

  • Four years of experience involving processing traffic and/or criminal cases, or related experience such as law enforcement. Preferred not required. 

 

Other Requirements:

  • A Michigan Vehicle Operator's license.
     
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
     
  • State Court Administrative Office Magistrate training as specified to fulfill assigned duties.
     
  • Ability to achieve LEIN Certification.

  • Ability to withstand prolonged periods of sitting in front of a computer monitor.
     

Working Conditions:

  • Works in an office or court setting but is also required to travel to other locations. 
     
  • Involves some remote work
     
  • Must be available on a 24-hour basis when performing the magisterial duties.
     
  • Rotational weekends and holidays required
     
  • Must reside in St. Joseph County
     
  • Must be a registered voter of St. Joseph County
