Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

POSITION TITLE: Social Studies Teacher
SUPERVISED BY: Principal
FLSA STATUS: Full-time Exempt (5/5th)
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 1, 2023
COMPENSATION RANGE: Based on CBA Salary Schedule with verified education and experience: $66,948 - $101,169 per year

Position Summary

This is a 5/5 (100% FTE) position, teaching Social Studies at several grade levels.

Responsibilities and Competencies

  • Model Lasallian/Vincentian charisms;

  • Support SHC’s mission, philosophy and Integral Student Outcomes;

  • In collaboration with the Social Studies Department colleagues, and per department goals (see https://www.shcp.edu/academics/category/social-studies):

    • Facilitate students’ critical thinking and historical literacy skills through historical and social inquiry and research;

    • Develop students’ analytical and communication abilities through document analysis, evidence-based writing, projects, simulations, and discussion;

    • Prepare future citizens to be curious about the world, to contribute to the common good, and to appreciate and respect diverse cultures and eras;

    • Help students begin to understand global economics, international relations, the relationships between the environment and human cultures, and historical trends;

  • Maintain an interactive and timely learning environment, in both physical and virtual learning spaces, to develop effective classroom relationships and to ensure that all students feel valued and confident they can learn;

  • Communicate consistently with students, parents, and school personnel;

  • Keep current and complete electronic grading and attendance records;

  • Participate in the school’s Advisory program and support cocurricular activities;

  • Commit to professional learning as part of being a reflective practitioner, integrating best and next teaching practices;

  • Actively participate in SHC’s strategic initiatives to strengthen meaningful diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging practices, especially strategies to support culturally responsive teaching, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning (as stipulated by the DEIB strategic plan adopted by SHC Board of Regents in 2021);

  • Participate in the four-year New Faculty Professional Development and Support Program;

  • Engage in the mission of SHC and the charisms of the Daughters of Charity and De La Salle Christian Brothers and Department of Catholic Schools through their formational programs.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Social Studies, History, Politics, Ethnic Studies or a related subject;

  • Teaching credential or working towards it; single-subject teaching credential in Social Studies
    preferred;

  • Experience working with high school students from diverse backgrounds;

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to promote student learning.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree;

  • Experience teaching in a Catholic high school setting.
