The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active ‘partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Creative Director, the Graphic Designer will be responsible for implementing the creative strategy and overall design of the Museum’s graphic identity and visual communications. This includes editorial, marketing, and advertising graphic design for print and digital, environmental graphics, collateral, and presentation materials. You will work closely with internal clients and external vendors overseeing accuracy, quality control, deadlines, and budget requirements. 

You Will:

  • Create original design graphics, artwork, and graphic visual materials harmonious with the mission of the Museum.
  • Help drive the branding and creative identity of projects, while preserving the overall current branding and identity of the Museum.
  • Print and digital design: including, but not limited to, monthly calendars, marketing materials, reports, event collateral, and brochures.
  • Advertising Creative: Create and execute advertising concepts designed for multiple formats, including newspaper and magazine advertisements in print and online, posters and more.
  • Exhibition Graphics: Create and execute large graphic elements related to exhibitions (e.g., labels, didactics, brochures, photo murals, etc.).
  • Implement strong brand identity materials and guidelines for partners/external use respecting the Museum’s existing style guide.
  • Create project-appropriate graphic strategies that respond to a wide range of Museum needs (i.e., fundraising versus education).
  • Be responsible for all graphic special needs and visual accessibility requirements (ADA compliance) for the Museum.
  • Oversee artwork, print production, and trafficking jobs.
  • Consult and liaise with internal and external partners, production teams, and outside vendors to produce strong visual communications.
  • Collaborate with project managers to maintain schedule and budget goals.
  • Participate in photography shoots of Museum objects or spaces for marketing/promotion/public relation campaigns.
  • Manage system for visual assets.
  • Oversee freelance designers and interns. 
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, fine arts, or related MFA preferred.
  • 5+ years of design-related work experience.
  • A strong portfolio of produced work demonstrating a high degree of creativity, diversity, productivity, and showcasing conceptual, color and layout skills. Strong typographical skills required.
  • Knowledge and experience working with and printing on various substrates and materials.
  • Mastery in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Working knowledge in Microsoft Office.
  • Extensive creative, conceptual, and critical thinking abilities with attention to detail and ability to proofread to produce accurate and high-quality work.
  • Experience working independently and effectively with others, managing deadlines, budgets, clients, and vendors.
  • Experience managing print production and trafficking jobs with knowledge of papers and printing processes.
  • Strong written, presentation, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Must be able to create an organized production schedule that incorporates time for both scheduled and unscheduled projects.
  • A sense of humor and a team player.
  • Ability to develop professional and creative motion effects for our videos and website preferred, but not required.
