ASL Interpreting Services Coordinator – Independent Contractor

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Vice President of Impact and Operations, the Academy Museum is looking for a new ASL Interpreting Services Coordinator acting as part of the Academy’s Office of Representation, Inclusion and Equity. The Coordinator will use a variety of soft skills and industry knowledge to process requests and schedule jobs related to requests and programs in and using ASL, with particular emphasis on personalized service and program enhancement. Familiarity/knowledge of the Deaf community, the interpreting profession, and conversational American Sign Language (ASL) is required.

You Will:

  • Answer texts, emails, and calls to schedule services while maintaining highest standards of customer service and confidentiality within the company's timeframe expectations.
  • Communicate with clients and requesters to obtain necessary information for scheduling and confirming interpreters.
  • Collaborate with Education, Film Programs, and Visitor Experience team members to facilitate more accessible events and programs.
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts.
  • Address and resolve issues and complaints.
  • Answer client and interpreter questions.
  • Provide basic ASL interpretation for meetings, programs, or visitor experience.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop and update procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain and grow relationships with current interpreting services clients as appropriate from language evaluations and internal referrals.
  • Devise ways to improve customer service and client relationships.
  • Solicit client and customer feedback and present reports to the Education and Public Program team during team meetings.
  • Use Academy systems and processes to schedule and confirm interpreters, update job information details, process payment, and track interpreter availability.
  • Match, assign and coordinate interpreting assignments between clients and contract interpreters.
  • Prepare and submit ASL interpreter invoices for payment by the agency.
  • Create and send invoices to clients for payment.
  • Track billing data and payment status.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • Thorough understanding of the interpreting field, the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, and familiarity of the ADA.
  • Knowledge/familiarity with Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing people and their linguistic and cultural variations.
  • Fluency in ASL, with the ability to adjust communications to match the needs of the receiver. Applicants without this will not be considered.
  • Knowledge/familiarity with Microsoft Office: Microsoft Word, Excel PowerPoint, and/or GSuite products: GMail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Hangouts/Meet.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn online meeting technologies such as Zoom.
  • Excellent written communication skills, effective leadership skills, and time management aptitude.
  • Ability to interface with fellow coordinators and contract interpreters with patience, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Ability to troubleshoot personnel challenges with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, apply sound judgment, respond to on-call needs, and accommodate last minute requests.
  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent client relationships and exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills.
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills and ability to process several tasks simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with VRI setup and knowledge of items to consider when confirming interpreters for VRI assignments.
  • Knowledge of the Los Angeles Area or ability to understand LA traffic patterns and distances between locations.

  • Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as needed to support programs with ASL interpretation.

 

Time Commitment:

  • 20 hours per week (2.5 days) covering core business hours with additional on call hours on nights and weekends as needed to fulfill client needs (approximately 2 additional hours per week).

 

Other Requirements:

  • Full vaccination against COVID-19 is required, including any booster vaccinations as applicable.
