The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Reporting to the Director of Publications, the Senior Editor, Publications provides editing and editorial project management for exhibition catalogues, gallery texts, and other materials published by the Academy Museum. We are seeking a candidate who is detail-oriented and effective, knowledgeable about museum practices, and enjoys working collaboratively in a team environment.

You Will:

  • Provide substantive editing, copy editing, fact-checking, and proofreading for a range of museum publications, including exhibition catalogues and gallery texts.
  • Work with authors to resolve editorial questions and review changes.
  • Track editorial projects through all stages of development, ensuring drafts and proofs are reviewed and approved by all necessary stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with curators, graphic designers, co-publishers, and other stakeholders to plan work, develop schedules, and meet deadlines.
  • Review and supervise the work of freelance editors, translators, indexers, proofreaders, and photo researchers, as necessary.
  • Update and maintain the museum’s style guide.
  • Work closely with the Director to develop and refine the museum’s editorial processes, standards, and forms.
  • Act as a second reader for primary editors on other projects.
  • Support other museum editorial tasks and department needs as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

You Have:

  • A Master’s degree in English, journalism, or another relevant field.
  • 5+ years of editing and publishing experience, preferably within a museum setting.
  • A thorough understanding of editing principles and the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition).
  • Proven ability to perform all aspects of the editorial process independently and manage complex projects.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working collaboratively and diplomatically with a wide range of authors and writers.
  • Ability to create, follow, and maintain schedules.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Google suite; experience with Airtable or similar database software is a plus.
  • Familiarity with and interest in museum interpretation issues and best practices.
  • Knowledge of book production and distribution.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
