JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Executive Director; plans, organizes, and supervises operations related to the maintenance of District’s buildings, grounds and natural resource areas.

Position Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

  • Bachelors’ degree in park and recreation management, business management, landscape architecture, natural resource management or related field.
  • Minimum five year supervisory experience in park and recreation management, grounds or natural resource management, construction management or related field.
  • Personnel management experience to employ, motivate, train, and schedule staff and contractors; working knowledge of management and labor laws.
  • Bilingual, English and Spanish speaking individuals are highly desirable and preferred.
  • Valid drivers’ license.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Thorough understanding of budget preparation, financial management and administration.
  • Strong working knowledge of turf management, natural area management and ornamental horticulture.
  • Working knowledge of construction trades and building materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of management and labor laws.
  • Ability to plan weekly, monthly and yearly work schedules for staff, ensuring efficient use of staff and resources.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazard and safety precautions.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision or equally well in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving expertise must be demonstrated frequently.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of programs and maintenance management software.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties

  • Evaluate staffing needs; including recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and training for personnel, and make adjustments within the Buildings, Grounds & Natural Resource Department so that the total program operates efficiently and creates an environment for success.
  • Prepare and administer annual departmental budget, goals, objectives, and work plan.
  • Establish and oversee District’s buildings, grounds and natural resources inspection, preventative maintenance schedules and work order repair system; ensuring quality work results that meet the District’s high standards.
  • Continually evaluates the effectiveness of maintenance procedures, programs and results and makes changes to improve quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Direct the development and implementation of natural resources maintenance and long-range improvement plans.
  • Oversee the District’s contracted mowing program, ensuring the quality and care meet the District’s standards.
  • Oversee the District’s turf fertilization and weed control program.
  • Works closely with and provides excellent communication to the District’s management team on matters relating to buildings, grounds and natural resources.
  • Responsible for loss prevention, safety training and enforcement of safety standards. Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the District's safety program.
  • Oversee the District’s contracted golf course maintenance program, ensuring the quality and care meet the District’s high standards.
  • Respond to citizen complaints and inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate written and oral records and reports as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Abide by the Bolingbrook Park District dress code for your area
  • Work as a Team Player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments.
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops, board meetings and other public meetings.

 

Marginal Duties

  • Researches grant opportunities and prepare grant applications.
  • Collaborate with Superintendent of Projects and Planning on matters of capital asset replacement impacting buildings, grounds or natural resources.
  • Coordinates, consults and cooperates with organizations and residents on buildings, grounds or natural resource related requests and projects.
  • File annual report with Illinois Water Inventory Program
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Seeing: to obtain information from written material; to drive a vehicle, to work on a computer

Walking: while reviewing parks and facilities

Climbing: to climb ladder to evaluate trees and stairs

Talking/Hearing: to communicate with staff, public and vendors

Sitting: to drive a vehicle; to work on a computer; doing desk work

Reaching: to retrieve files and manuals and equipment

Pulling/Pushing: to open drawers and doors

Stooping/Crouching: to retrieve files at lower levels; to look underneath equipment

 

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS

Must have the ability to read, write and organize materials. Proficient in building construction and preventative maintenance, landscape architecture, horticulture, natural resource management. Ability to understand basic computer programs. Ability to plan, direct and supervise staff. Ability to drive an automobile. Must be able to work and relate to other people in a professional manner. Must exhibit good safety awareness and judgment.

 

FLSA

This is a full time, salary, exempt position

IMRF

This position has mandatory participation in the IMRF-Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, pension fund.

HOURS

The Director of Buildings, Grounds and Natural Resources shall have no established hours yet is expected to invest the necessary time to produce exceptional results. The staff under this position generally works 6:30am, to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday but may need to do evenings and weekends for events and snow removal.
