Position Requirements

<p>Job Summary: Under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse, the medication assistant administers and records select oral, nasal, transdermal and rectal, inhalant and ophthalmic scheduled medications to residents. Trained to measure and record blood pressure, radial pulse and blood glucose readings by way of a finger stick. Is also trained to perform and clean wound treatments.</p><p> </p><p>Qualifications:</p><p>1. Must have successfully completed the State of Wisconsin Medication Assistant Training Program or has successfully completed an approved college level pharmacology course and training in the area of medication administration</p><p>2. Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant in Wisconsin; in good standings</p><p>3. Must adhere to all safety security, infection control (including Universal Precautions) and hazardous materials policies and procedures, and perform all tasks to assure resident and personal safety and the protection of Holton Manor policy</p><p>4. Must be able to physically waist lift a maximum of 30# with frequent waist lifting of objects weighting up to 10#. Must be able to push and or pull objects with a maximum effort of 25#.</p><p>5. Must be able to stand or walk 4-6 hours in an 8-12 hour work day.</p><p>6. Must be able to occasionally bend, squat and twist body during n 8-12 hour day.</p><p>7. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.</p><p> </p><p>Working Conditions:</p><p>1. May be subject to bruises and scratches from residents striking out.</p><p>2. May be exposed to infections and odors.</p><p>3. Involved in tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or mucous membranes on a daily routine basis.</p><p> </p><p>Responsibilities:</p><p> </p><p>1. Administers scheduled medications prescribed for routine administration according to established facility administration policies and procedures</p><p>2. Knows and upholds pharmacological principles, procedures and safety precautions with all medications</p><p>3. Administers oral, ophthalmic, ear, rectal, nasal, transdermal, meter dosed inhalants and wound treatments</p><p>4. IS NOT ABLE TO ADMINISTER injectable medications, parenteral medications, gastric or NG medications or feedings.</p><p>5. May administer PRN medications only upon the direction of a licensed nurse</p><p>6. May perform blood glucose monitoring (i.e. accu-checks) after a successful return skill demonstration</p><p>7. Complies with the Residents Bill of Rights</p><p>8. Reports to nurse when coming on duty and going off duty. Obtains assignments and specific directions from Unit Nurse or RN supervisor</p><p>9. Reports to unit nurse any physical or emotional change in resident’s status/needs, in safe conditions and maintenance problems immediately.</p><p>10. Takes and records blood pressure and pulse as indicated in conjunction with prescribed medication therapy and/or those necessary to maintain ongoing observation of a resident.</p><p>11. Participates and attends as required all in-services provided for employees and appropriate to the job classification</p><p>12. Works effectively and cooperatively as a team member with nursing staff</p><p>13. Floats to any nursing unit as needed</p><p>14. Works as a Certified Nursing Assistant as needed and directed by the charge nurse</p><p>15. Knowledgeable of medication actions, medication effects on body systems and side effects, especially in the geriatric population</p><p>16. Must be able to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instruction</p><p>17. Must be able to administer medications to elderly, confused and emotionally upset residents in a safe and mature manner and ability to accurately document this activity.</p><p>18. Changes schedule or works overtime (when authorized by supervisor) when necessary to meet the needs of the residents</p><p>19. At times will be asked to do PM call light checks to ensure compliance</p><p>20. At times will be asked to do room audits to ensure cleanliness</p><p>21. At times will be asked to audit PERI CARE checks, oral cares, Hoyer lifts, etc.</p><p>22. At times will be asked to assist with an admission </p><p>23. May be asked to assist HUC with paperwork and duties</p><p>24. Put away NURSING STOCK SUPPLIES when deliveries come in, NO exceptions!</p><p> </p><p>Other Important DAILY DUTIES – NO EXCEPTIONS<br />1. Clean Med Carts and Treatment Carts DAILY by disinfecting<br />2. Clean refrigerators, disinfect DAILY<br />3. Wipe down countertops in med rooms and nurses stations DAILY<br />4. AUDIT and RESTOCK all medications prior to the end of your shift DAILY<br />5. Check for expired medications, including over the counter medications. All OTC’s have to have an “opened date” on the outside of the bottle. Cannot be more than 30 days old. DAILY<br />6. Check TREATMENT CARTS for expired supplies, meds, etc. DAILY</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Physical and Cognitive Requirements:</p><p> </p><p>1. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.</p><p>2. Must be able to push, pull, lift objects up to 50# frequently</p><p>3. In an emergency situation, must be able to move residents safely</p><p>4. Must be able to perform simple motor skills; standing, walking, writing</p><p>5. Must be able to perform gross body coordination and hand-eye coordination</p><p>6.
