The Position:

The Family Support Services (FSS) team has an exciting new opportunity to provide services to those experiencing homelessness. The Family Advocate will work collaboratively with library patrons to connect them to public and private agencies and guide them in overcoming obstacles to obtaining safe housing and maintain self-sufficiency. Guided by the Protective Factors Framework, the Family Advocate will provide comprehensive services to library patrons to support their overall wellbeing. Through advocacy, case management and linkage to community resources, the Family Advocate will identify risks, promote strengths, and equip patrons with the skills and knowledge needed to overcome sources of stress, strengthen resiliency, and obtain stable and safe housing.

 

This position will work five days per week, Tuesday to Saturday, from 9am to 6pm to align with the Santa Barbara Public Library’s schedule.

Because working with those impacted by trauma can affect staff in various ways, FSA actively identifies and employs methods to support staff to embody a healthy and sustainable balance of care for both themselves and others.

 

Sample of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in social action community groups and engage in community coalitions.
  • Utilize assessment skills and screening tools to triage families and determine appropriate services.
  • Exhibit a working knowledge of community resources and provide appropriate referral to support access to housing, social, educational, and health services.
  • Serve as a liaison between the library patrons, community resources to support social emotional well-being, as well as provide crisis triage services.
  • Participate in program events during traditional and non-traditional business hours to conduct outreach, build relationships, and enhance service access.
  • Maintain up-to date documentation and case files through the agency database.
 
Position Requirements

Employment Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related field is required.
  • A minimum of one year work experience in the school or community providing services to at-risk children and/or families.
  • Ability to have a warm and empathetic interpersonal style to establish trusting relationships with children, parents and guardians, health professionals, and community organizations.
  • Must have the ability and desire to provide services that are relevant to the culture of the individual.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt service delivery to the needs of the individual is a must.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Possess a valid California Drivers License, proof of vehicle insurance, and reliable transportation.

 

Classification, Hours and Pay Rate:

  • This position is full-time (40.0 hours), non-exempt, with benefits. Benefits include: medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) retirement plan. Generous sick and vacation time also offered.
  • Pay starts at $19.25/hour.
