Work Status: Temporary Full-time (1.0 FTE)

Contract: This is a one-year position with the possibility of extension subject to funding and the performance of the post-doctoral fellow

Description:

The Possibility Engineering and Research Lab (PEARL) at the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow. PEARL works closely with families, clinicians and an interdisciplinary team to co-create, evaluate and translate digital media to support opportunities for well-being, play, and learning for children of all abilities.  Applications are invited for a 1-year, full-time Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) position to work with Dr. Elaine Biddiss, a rehabilitation engineer with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and the Institute of Rehabilitation Science at the University of Toronto. In this role, the PDF will have the opportunity to participate in multiple tri-council funded projects, develop skills in technology design and evaluation, translational research, project management, technology transfer, trainee mentorship, networking, and grant and paper writing. They will work alongside an interdisciplinary team, children of diverse abilities and their families, to study the use and impact of technologies, such as movement-tracking video games for rehabilitation therapies, and artificially intelligent apps for inclusive and home-based early childhood music education. All activities aim to foster more equitable participation in research and access to health innovations for positive impact. The successful candidate possesses and applies innovative research and design practices in the areas of knowledge translation, health technologies, and/or outcome measurement. Previous experience in qualitative and mixed methods research, childhood disability, music, and/or technology and user interface design an asset.

 

Key Responsibilities

In this position, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Manage innovative reseach projects, including planning and coordination, data analysis, and interpretation of study results
  • Opportunity to work with game developers, artists and engineers to guide the iterative design process in line with research findings
  • Develop new ideas, project proposals including grants, research protocols 
  • Assist in the writing and submission of grant applications
  • Work with international collaborators
  • Write, prepare, and format manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals  
  • Revise manuscript drafts in response to reviewer and editor comments
  • Support the training and supervision of research students
  • Present your work at international conferences
  • Work with Holland Bloorview’s commercialization office to support technology transfer

 

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD in translational research, health services research, health technology design, or related discipline
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing workload
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience with qualitative methods an asset
  • Experience working with children of diverse abilities an asset
