SUMMARY:

We are seeking a Business Development Specialist to work within the Commercialization Office and based out of the Bloorview Research Institute at Holland Bloorview. The BRI recently released it's 2023-2030 Strategic Priorities.  In line with these priorities, the Business Development Specialist will support the execution of our commercialization strategy through internal and external partnerships.  

The Business Development Specialist will play a crucial role in facilitating the transfer of innovative technologies and research outcomes from BRI to the commercial sector.  In addition, the Business Development Specialist will also bring in revenue through our MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) services focusing on expanding and enhancing the utilization of MRI services within a research setting.

The successful candidate will have experience in digital and technology business development, with a proven history of successfully finalizing commercialization agreements. This includes adept negotiation skills in intellectual property licensing deals with the help of an extensive network spanning the private sector, investment, and venture domains. A career trajectory indicating a genuine passion for the field, particularly its application in healthcare, is crucial. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify and evaluate novel revenue-generating opportunities across all BRI research areas
  • Work with Commercialization Coordinator to conduct market analysis and assess commercial viability of technologies to understand potential applications, target markets and competitive landscapes
  • Advising on product/prototype development based on market needs
  • Promote the portfolio of technologies available for transfer through marketing, presentations, and other outreach activities to attract potential industry partners and investors
  • Work closely with Director of Operations and MRI Charge Technologist to implement effective sales strategies to drive business growth and increase the utilization of MRI services
  • Identify and explore strategic partnerships with healthcare organizations, medical professionals, and industry stakeholders
  • Negotiate contracts, collaborations, and agreements with industry partners, ensuring mutually beneficial terms for both the academic institution and the external entities
  • Oversee the commercialization process, coordinating efforts between researchers, legal teams, and external partners to ensure smooth technology transfer and implementation
  • Maintain accurate records of technology transfer activities, prepare reports, and document key milestones and achievements
  • Keeping abreast of trends, regulations, and policies surrounding healthcare and compliance standards including, but not limited to those related to digital healthcare, gaming, accessible technologies and MRI services
  • Participate in on-the-job training as appropriate
  • Facilitate other ad-hoc projects as assigned
  • Limited travel within Ontario will be required
  • May require a flexible working schedule (i.e. weekends, overtime)

 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • At minimum, completion of a Master's degree program or recognized equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Rehabilitation or Medical sciences or related technologies 
  • MBA or JD is an asset
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant business experience in university or research institute technology transfer, commercialization, intellectual property management or research partnership development 
  • Business Development and or Licensing experience working in health technology development related to technology transfer, venture capital, MRI services or related environment required
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations and compliance standards
  • Working knowledge of digital privacy laws and regulatory frameworks in Canada and the US as may be relevant to commercialization of digital health technologies is required
  • Industry experience and/or scientific background in a medical research area relevant to BRI's research mandate would be an asset
  • Strong capacity for understanding and evaluating detailed legal agreements is an asset
  • Good knowledge of intellectual property protection required
  • Very good knowledge of licensing practice required
  • Strong presentation skills required
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize while working under tight deadlines is required
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated history of taking initiatives is required
