Description:

The NASA Ames Research Center is conducting a firefighter/EMT test to establish a hiring list and will hire anywhere from 1-6 members. Hiring list will be used for minimum 12 months, not to exceed 18 months. The NASA Ames Fire Department (operated under contract by Fiore Industries) provides structural firefighting services, airfield protection to include aircraft rescue, wildland firefighting, Basic Life Support (BLS) as Emergency Medical Technicians, hazardous material response capabilities, and technical rescue services on the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Federal Airfield, and associated facilities and properties on site.

Essential Functions:

  1. Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for service.
  2. Perform required training and maintain required state and local certifications/licenses to meet NFPA, Fiore Industries policies, and customer contractual requirements.
  3. Drive and operate emergency response vehicles during emergency incidents. Operate fire pumps and associated suppression equipment to control an incident.
  4. Select proper firefighting tools and equipment to control and extinguish fires. 
  5. Use ladders to gain access to assist individuals from affected structures.
  6. Perform search and rescue operations.
  7. Utilize appropriate safety equipment, remove hazardous materials from buildings, and assist in determining corrective action.
  8. Provide emergency medical care during emergencies.
  9. Perform extrication operations to free individuals trapped in vehicles, elevators, or structures.
  10. Perform inspections, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs to emergency response equipment. Record all pertinent information regarding inspections and maintenance.
  11. Perform required testing and inspecting of fire protection and suppression systems. Record all pertinent information regarding testing and inspections.
  12. May be required to assume a position in the Incident Management System.
  13. Responsible for developing and delivering training sessions as assigned by Shift Battalion Chief.
  14. Conduct special projects and complete tasks as assigned.
  15. Follow established NASA/Ames policies, rules, and procedures utilizing personal protective equipment as required. Report all problems, violations, or concerns to the appropriate individual.
  16. Attend basic safety training and other related or required courses.
  17. Perform BLS care in accordance with all applicable NASA Ames, local, and State EMS protocols.
  18. Maintain assigned work area and equipment to established standard of housekeeping, preservation, and maintenance.
  19. Ensure time spent at work is properly recorded in the payroll management system.
  20. Perform required vehicle, equipment, and station inspections and maintenance, pre-fire planning, public education, and other assigned projects.
  21. Always demonstrate a professional demeanor and appearance with courteous and ethical behavior.
  22. Participate in professional education and fitness training.
  23. Work as in integral team player interacting positively with other employees and contributing to the Department’s success.
  24. Perform other related duties as assigned or required.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • California or National Registry EMT Certification (with the ability to transfer certification) as an Emergency Medical Technician in Santa Clara County. See initial certifications requirements at: https://emsagency.sccgov.org/sites/g/files/exjcpb266/files/General/initialemt%202021.0211.pdf
  • Certification as a Firefighter II (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC) and completion of an accredited Firefighter academy.
  • Certification in CPR/AED through the American Heart Association or equivalent agency.
  • California Class “C” Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a California Commercial Class “B” or better within 12 months of starting.
  • Ability to meet the professional qualifications of NFPA 1001 and 1002 at the date of hire.
  • Meet NASA required minimum standard physical fitness requirements for firefighters, including the annual Physical Abilities Test.
  • Obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to the qualifications listed above): 

  • 2-years’ experience with industrial, local government, state, or Federal Fire service provider.
  • California Commercial Class “B’ Driver’s License or better.
  • Certification as an Airport Fire Fighter (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
  • Certification as an Apparatus Driver/Operator Pumper (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
  • Certification as an Apparatus Driver/Operator Aerial (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
  • Certification as an Apparatus Driver/Operator ARFF (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
  • Certification as a Hazardous Materials Technician (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
  • Certification as a Rescue Technician (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC), or certifications in:
    • Rope Rescue Technician (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
    • Confined Space Technician (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
    • Vehicle/Machinery Rescue Technician (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
    • Structural Collapse Awareness (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).
    • Trench Rescue Awareness (CFSTES, Pro-Board, or IFSAC).

Notes:

  • Candidates selected for employment that do not have all preferred certifications listed above will be required to obtain them within 365 days of initial hire.
  • CFSTES – California Fire Service Training and Education System (CA State Fire Marshal).
  • Pro-Board – National Professional Qualifications Board.
  • IFSAC – International fire Service Accreditation Congress.

 

Hiring Process:

The hiring process will consist of three (3) components.

  1. Supplemental Questionnaire/Resume Review
    • Top candidates who meet minimum qualification will proceed to the in person oral board interviews and the physical agility test.
  2. Oral Board Interview
  3. Physical Agility Test (PAT), (Go/No-Go)
    • Applicant must show up physically fit and capable of performing firefighting duties to successfully complete all components of the PAT. Pending resources available, exercises/portions of the PAT may be interchanged. Member will take the PAT at NASA ARC at their own risk/liability.
      • The PAT shall be performed while wearing a firefighter PPE to include a structural firefighting coat, helmet, firefighting gloves, and an SCBA pack (all will be provided).
      • The entire PAT shall be completed in under 7-minutes.
      • Ascend and descend 75 feet of stairway while carrying a 14-pound simulated high rise pack.
      • Hoist a 50-foot roll of 13/4” hose with nozzle, using a ½ inch to 5/8-inch rope, to a height of 50-feet.
      • Simulate forcible entry by striking a 150-pound beam with a 9-pound sledgehammer to move the beam a distance of 5-feet (on the Keiser Sled). Firefighters must keep both hands below a tape-marked line on the sledgehammer and only contract the beam with the flat potion of the head of the sledgehammer while striking.
      • Lift, drag, or carry a 170-pound mannequin a distance of 85-feet.
  4. Successfully complete post-offer medical examination to include approval to use/wear respiratory protection equipment and pass the required drug screening process. Applicant will also be required to obtain government security clearance (SECRET-level).

Compensation/Benefits:

Salary: $51.98 per hour (minimum 48-hours per-week on 48/96-hour work schedule)

This position is a non-exempt position under the IAFF Local I-79 and is subject to a contract bargaining agreement.
