Equipment Operator, Specialized 

Location City of Griffin  
Description

The work of this position involves operating various heavy and/or specialized equipment efficiently and safely to maintain City property including roads, rights-of-way, streets, water/drainage systems.

Public Works Department

  • Operates track hoe for repairs, replacement, and for moving debris.
  • Operates street sweeper for leaf removal and cleaning operations.
  • Operates track loader for site excavation, clearing operations, and pipe installation.
  • Operates a motor grader used in the maintenance and grading as needed.
  • Operates various aerial mowers, pulls ditches, and cuts or removes debris.
  • Operates articulating bucket lifts and clam/bucket trucks used to prune or remove trees.Performs maintenance on equipment including changing blades, tires, oil, filters, hoses, nozzles, etc.
  • Flags traffic at project sites to ensure a safe work environment.

Watershed Management Department/Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection

  • Operates motor vehicles and sewer television equipment, specifically: jet truck, rod truck, vacuum truck, sewer television truck, video camera, recorder, and related controls and cables used to inspect construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer lines.
  • Examines equipment prior to use; performs maintenance tasks necessary to keep video equipment, and related tools in good working condition including greasing, maintaining fluid levels, and cleaning; ensures necessary equipment repairs are made.
  • Inspects existing, repaired, and new sewer lines utilizing sewer television equipment; locates, identifies, and records areas in sewer lines requiring maintenance/repair; uncovers and inspects manholes and manhole covers.
  • Raises manhole ring and covers.
  • Responds to request for service of stopped sewer lines; unstops various sizes of sewer lines; clears and disinfects sewer lines and yards, cleans out debris from manhole inverts.
  • Repairs sewer lines; maintains knowledge of sewer system including location of sewer lines, direction of flow, and use of sewer construction materials.
  • Completes necessary paperwork showing condition of sewer lines at time of inspection; prepares and/or receives various forms, reports, or other documents; forwards as appropriate.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio, provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Cleans and washes sewer service trucks.

Watershed Management Department/Stormwater

  • Operates motor vehicle and heavy equipment, specifically: jet vac truck, sewer television equipment, track loader, articulated loader, rubber tire tractor/loader, skid steer loader, various mowers (including remote controlled equipment), and other equipment associated with drainage maintenance and construction.
  • Examines equipment prior to use; performs maintenance tasks necessary to keep video equipment, and related tools in good working condition including greasing, maintaining fluid levels, and cleaning; ensures necessary equipment repairs are made.
  • Repairs and replaces damaged storm drain lines and surrounding areas including removal and replacement of fences, landscaping, etc.
  • Flags traffic at project sites to ensure a safe work environment.

Solid Waste - Landfill

  • Operates excavator to load debris into a slow speed shredder.
  • Operates slow speed shredder to reduce size of debris coming into the landfill.
  • Must have the experience to operate the excavator while simultaneously operating the slow speed shredder via radio remote.
  • Must have the experience to carefully load the slow speed shredder as to not damaging the machine.
  • Must have the experience to meet production requirements for the slow speed shredder.
  • Will be responsible for the condition and operation of the excavator as well as the slow speed shredder.
  • Examines equipment prior to use; performs maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment in good working condition including greasing, maintaining fluid levels, and cleaning; ensures necessary equipment repairs are made.

Related Duties for the respective Department.

 
Position Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Current and valid State of Georgia driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to road improvement and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of achieving grade, drainage, and proper compaction.
  • Knowledge of pipe installation and repair.
  • Knowledge of equipment capabilities and limits.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures associated with construction sites and common public works functions.
  • Knowledge of traffic hazards and traffic safety principles, practices and procedures.
  • Skill in reading and understanding engineering plans and drawings.
  • Skill in comprehending and following workplace safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in operating typical site development tools such as level, transit, etc.
  • Skill in operating all heavy equipment.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining specialty equipment and typical site development tools.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with others.

Hourly Rate of Pay $18.09 with competitive benefits package including generous pension plan.
