Description

Primary Responsibility: The Aquatics Coordinator plans, directs, and oversees the staff, operations, and activities of aquatic facilities. Oversees the development, promotion, and implementation of aquatics programs such as swim lessons, swim team and aquafit. Collaborates with Parks and Recreation Director and community participants to lead and develop a fun aquatics program for the community in a safe and professional environment. Ensures aquatics facilities are properly maintained and clean, including locker rooms and performs related work as required.

Supervises: Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors, and Water Safety Instructor Aides

 

FLSA status: Non-Exempt

 

Examples of Duties for Success:

The duties listed below are representative of, but do not necessarily include, all the duties and responsibilities that an individual in this position may be called upon to perform.

  • Creates an environment of trust, safety, and fun. Influences and creates a positive environment for County residents.
  • Monitors the mechanical and chemical operations of the pools to ensure that they are running efficiently and effectively. Ensures water quality tests and readings are conducted and documented daily. Conducts and oversees routine safety checks of equipment. Ensures that all required maintenance is completed. Corrects all water quality problems as they arise.
  • Provides direct leadership and management to Aquatics team, including scheduling and approving payroll for all pool staff. With Director approval, oversees hiring, evaluating, disciplining, and exiting of aquatics staff when necessary
  • Performs Lifeguarding duties, as needed, to maintain appropriate supervision of guests.
  • Uses strong customer service skills and problem-solving skills to design and implement solutions. Receives and responds to questions and concerns from guests about aquatic facilities, equipment and programs; identifies issues and resolves problems or refers to Director as appropriate.
  • Leads training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures; ensures that lifeguard staff attend required trainings and maintains records on same.
  • Responsible for monitoring swimming and pool equipment; ensures proper placement and availability in the pool area; performs routine facility maintenance tasks; ensures maintenance and repairs are completed as needed.
  • Ensures that all shifts are properly staffed. Schedules staff for special events and facility rentals when required.
  • Obtains bids or pricing information for aquatic equipment and supplies; orders and picks up supplies as necessary.
  • Assists Director -
    • In the preparation and administration of the department budget.
    • To coordinate activities with other departments.
    • Provide support for Community Center specials events.
  • Coordinate and implement Parks & Recreation special programs or events, assist with front desk, league, camp and/or fitness class operations.
  • Attends trainings, conferences, and staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Implements and updates written policies and procedures, and other documents, as needed.
  • Performs other appropriate functions as assigned by the Parks & Recreation Director, and any duties needed to stabilize an emergency.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications for Success:

  • Technical Knowledge:
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and Adobe with the ability to learn new software programs. Basic knowledge of HTML a plus.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal legislation and regulations in aquatics operations.
  • Ability to:
    • Assess and monitor community needs; identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures for development and implementation of new program areas.
    • Speak effectively before groups of employees and public groups and respond to questions.
    • Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction.
    • Understand, interpret, and communicate complicated policies, procedures and protocols.
    • Plan, organize, assign, direct, motivate, review and evaluate the work of staff, and provide for their training and professional development.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, elected officials, the public and other agencies.
    • Accurately and effectively transmit and receive information that is necessary to the accomplishment of goals and objectives, including effective written and oral communications in English; and the ability to listen.
    • Knowledge of and ability to research, compile, and summarize a variety of informational and statistical data and materials; prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
    • Strong organizational leadership abilities and demonstrate skill in administration, personnel, team building and finance.
    • Strong interpersonal, decision-making and management skills.

Education:

    • Bachelor degree in business administration, recreation, physical education for related field preferred.
  •  

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of lifeguarding with increasing responsibility.
  • Pool chemical and pool maintenance experience highly desirable.
  • Previous lifeguarding supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience teaching swimming lessons required.

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by Gilpin County may be substituted for the requirements above.

 

Certifications:

Offer contingent upon completing required trainings and receiving valid certifications.  Costs of certifications may be reimbursed by the County.

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification.
  • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator certification is highly desirable.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License without any restriction due to driving record. Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.
  • Must possess FEMA ICS 100 and 700 certifications within 6 months of employment.
  • Hours: Evenings and weekends maybe required as needed.

Salary Information $20.82 -29.14 per hour; Based on experience and qualifications
