Your role in helping us shape the future:

The Health Data Scientist serves as a scientific leader on the health analysis team responsible for generating the widely cited annual U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals rankings. This individual will provide recommendations to guide the ongoing evolution of the methodology used to inform potentially life-altering healthcare decisions made by millions of usnews.com users each year. In addition to the significant public visibility, the results of your work are closely followed by diverse healthcare stakeholders, including leaders of health systems. You will have opportunities to engage with healthcare executives, researchers and clinicians.

Your primary responsibilities will be to provide oversight of the research activities of a team of data analysts. On a day to day basis, you will write and review code to manage large Medicare administrative claims data sets and other data sources, derive comparable quality measures across a variety of healthcare settings, and combine these metrics into simple and meaningful evaluations of healthcare providers. You will report to the Chief of Health Analysis.

Position Requirements

You should have:

  • Multiple years of professional experience in biostatistics, health services research, epidemiology, health economics, health policy or a similar field
  • Master’s degree in a quantitative area of study
  • A high degree of comfort with data management of large data sets
  • Strong grasp of modeling and statistical principles relevant to quality measurement
  • Ability to cultivate and mentor a diverse team and lead by example
  • Ability to communicate methods concepts to people with non-technical backgrounds internally and externally
  • High level of proficiency in STATA (strongly preferred), SAS or R. All coding is done in STATA.
  • Attention to detail, strong communication, organizational and time management skills
  • Comfort in presenting research to clinical and scientific audiences

It would be nice if you had:

  • Experience analyzing Medicare claims or other healthcare administrative data sets
  • Experience collecting and validating primary data
  • Knowledge of multilevel models and/or confirmatory factor analysis or other structural equation models
  • A Ph.D. or research experience in epidemiology, biostatistics or similar quantitative field
  • Experience in chairing meetings of clinicians
  • Experience in developing patient advisory councils
