Director, Communications and Marketing 

About the Organization The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), a non-profit membership association more than 180,000 current and retired federal employees, is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the earned pay, retirement and health care benefits of federal employees, retirees and their survivors and providing the information and guidance needed to understand and maximize complex federal benefits. NARFE is the go-to resource for the federal community, policymakers, and the media on issues related to legislation and federal benefits.  
Description

We are currently seeking a Director of Communications and Marketing who is an outstanding storyteller and strategic thinker responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of a broad range of communications activities in support of membership and non-dues revenue goals. The director is a key member of a leadership team for the department in conjunction with a membership director and a business development director. In addition, he/she supervises the digital communications team, a creative services manager and a publication editor.

  • In conjunction with the Staff Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Membership, ongoing development and implementation of comprehensive communications and content strategy to include marketing and public relations plans to strengthen visibility of the organization’s brand and programs to internal and external stakeholders
  • Acts as point of contact to manage media contacts.
  • Creates or manages the creation of content including but not limited to speeches and articles for senior leadership, presidential statements, press releases, media statements, letter-to-the-editor templates, fundraising appeals, etc.
  • Coordinates with other directors to develop and drive the implementation of promotional plans for webinars, conferences, membership campaigns, etc.
  • Oversees editorial staff to ensure that communications are high quality and on point. Serves as editorial director, supervising development of content for publications and digital communications.
  • Develops and leads "federal employee visibility” campaigns to help generate awareness of the important work that NARFE members and prospective members have done and continue to do
  • Conducts media training for officers as needed; oversees development of chapter support materials such as PR or marketing handbooks as needed
  • Manages special projects such as the NARFE Centennial in 2021
  • Manages communications department budget
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or other relevant field required
  • 7-10 years of nonprofit communications experience required. Advocacy and/or association experience preferred
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Effective supervisory skills and ability to manage, mentor, and lead staff.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to finesse writing to specific stakeholder audiences
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated leadership acumen
  • The ability to work collaboratively with executive team and other department directors
  • Familiarity with best practices in public relations and marketing
  • Excellent time management and project management skills
