Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The Houston SPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Description

This position is responsible for managing the accounting and finance function of the Houston SPCA, while serving as a manager reporting to the CFO & VP Administration.

The Accounting Manager will manage the policies and procedures related to all financial and accounting functions, including but not limited to reporting, budgeting, cash management, external audits and payroll.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Oversee the organization’s financial operations and accounting practices based on generally accepted accounting principles; ensure transparent financial information and ethical behavior standards; advise staff on organization’s financial policies and procedures.
  • Manage and oversee the Accounts Payable & Payroll Clerk and the AP function.
  • Manage and oversee the Payroll function.
  • Manage the monthly close process, for the organization.
  • Responsible for recording cash receipts, to the organization.
  • Responsible for the reconciliation and maintenance of bank accounts.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the general ledger, for the organization.
  • Serve as a principal steward of the organization’s resources, ensuring that all resources are utilized properly, legally and ethically.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and business practices related to financial management.
  • Serve as contact with independent audit firm, for annual audit, and prepare documents required for the 990 tax return.
  • Work closely with the CFO & VP Administration as it pertains to preparing Board materials.
  • Manage the organization’s cash flow and forecasting and oversee the financial portion of Capital projects.
  • Protects all confidential information, including donors, clients, animals and internal communications.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Passion for the mission of the Houston SPCA.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (e.g. finance, accounting or business administration) with a minimum of 10 years of accounting/financial management experience (preferably at the Manager level); non-profit administration and management experience a plus. CPA, CMA, MA in Accounting or MBA is highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (proficient to advanced level in Excel specifically), payroll processing and finance/accounting software (Financial Edge working knowledge a plus).
  • Must possess working knowledge of regulatory areas pertaining to payroll and general business financial conditions.
  • Ability to function independently, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate a high level of problem-solving skills and the ability to make critical decisions and to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, build consensus with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Be insurable under Houston SPCA auto policy.
  • Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day; able to lift up to 25 pounds. Able to endure moderate (office) to high (shelter) noise level and exposure to animals.
