Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Position Summary
This position is a full-time (5/5) faculty position teaching several History or Social Science courses from the Social Studies curriculum

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Model for students the characteristics of a Lasallian Vincentian educator;

  • Support SHC’s mission, philosophy and ESLRs;

  • In collaboration with Social Studies department colleagues and per department outcomes (see https://www.shcp.edu/academics/category/social-studies)

  • Facilitate students’ critical thinking and historical literacy skills through historical and social inquiry and research;

  • Develop students’ analytical abilities through document analysis, evidence-based writing, projects, simulations, and discussion;

  • Prepare future citizens to be curious about the world, and to appreciate and respect diverse cultures and eras;

  • Help students to understand global economics, and international relations, social customs, and historical trends;

  • Engage students in the creation of an environment of respect and dignity;

  • Implement best practices in pedagogy:

  • Design and implement standards-based lessons to stimulate critical thinking and masteryof essential skills and understandings as determined by the department;

    • Plan and implement what students will learn, how they will learn, and how they will be assessed in a manner appropriate to the grade level;

    • Provide regular and varied assessments of student learning to assess student achievement over time and to ensure that all students are learning;

  • Maintain an interactive and engaging learning environment, in both physical and virtual learning spaces;

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school personnel;

  • Keep current and complete electronic grading and attendance records;

  • Work with Academic Resource Specialists and/or counselors to accommodate students who have learning differences or who fall behind in work;

  • Participate in the cocurricular life of the school.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in History, Social Studies, or related subject;
Teaching credential or work toward credential; single-subject teaching credential in History or Social Studies preferred.

Desired Qualifications
Experience in a Catholic high school setting;
Experience working with high school students in a college preparatory school;
Ability to work collaboratively to promote student learning.
