Description

The Program Officer/Senior Program Officer, Birth Justice Fund, is a new 3-year, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded position to advance community power building and address racially-based health disparities among Black, Indigenous and People of Color who identify as women. This position will play a crucial role in leading a new and exciting portfolio of BIPOC-led organizations working to advance birth justice and reproductive justice in the United States.

The Program Officer/Senior Program Officer will have expertise in the birth justice and reproductive justice movements and knowledge of the context, issues, and trends within these movements. The Program Officer will bring a broad understanding of racial and gender justice, with a particular focus on the issues and challenges facing women and girls of color, Indigenous women and girls, including queer and trans women, immigrant and low income communities. In addition, they will have knowledge of social justice philanthropy and an understanding of movement building, grassroots advocacy, policy advocacy and community organizing within women of color communities. The Program Officer will have expertise in feminism, gender justice, racial justice and LGBTQ justice movements, and an intersectional, cross-movement analysis.

The Program Officer/ Senior Program Officer will work closely with the Senior Director of Grantmaking and Capacity Building, and will be part of the Ms. Program Team working to implement a new birth justice grantmaking program in synergy with a 5-year program strategy to advance the safety, health and economic justice of women and girls of color in the US and US territories. In this role, the Program Officer will identify strategic opportunities and priorities in the field; determine potential grantees and partner organizations; manage grantmaking, capacity building, and programmatic initiatives; and collaborate with grantees, funders, colleagues and other partners to advance programmatic goals and outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Grantmaking 50%

  • Identify strategic priorities, gaps and opportunities to advance birth justice for BIPOC women;
  • Develop a grantmaking strategy and manage a portfolio of grants for the birth justice work, including identifying new grantees and making recommendations regarding grants to advance Ms.' program strategy;
  • Manage grantmaking processes for the portfolio, including writing requests for proposals, reviewing proposals, docket write-ups, and facilitating review meetings;
  • Monitor grantee progress and outcomes;
  • Cultivate relationships with grantees, funders, and other movement partners
  • Conduct site visits;
  • Stay abreast of trends and new developments in philanthropy and social justice movements.
  • Actively participate in convenings and RWJF-led events

Philanthropic Advocacy 20%

  • Plan, facilitate and participate in external meetings and follow-up as appropriate;
  • Actively engage in external philanthropic organizations and networks to promote a gender and racial justice lens in the philanthropic sector, highlight grantees, and increase resources for work led by and for women and girls of color;
  • Organize or assist in the organization of donor and external stakeholder activities to create connections across related issues and fields;
  • Represent the Foundation at external program-related meetings and conferences;
  • Present at conference panels and workshops.

Capacity Building 20%

  • Collaborate with the Director of Capacity Building and Learning and other Ms. team members to develop and implement technical assistance, capacity-building, and field-building strategies as needed;
  • Coordinate technical assistance to grantees in areas of community organizing, advocacy and organizational development.

Learning and Collaboration 10%

  • Participate as active member in cross-department and foundation wide activities;
  • Collaborate across various teams as needed;
  • Special projects or research on key issues related to position as directed.

 
Position Requirements
  • Minimum 5-7 years’ work experience in program management, grantmaking or community organizing.
  • Commitment to the Foundation’s mission and vision and to working with diverse communities toward women’s safety, health and economic justice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Foundation’s values of integrity, trust and respect, interconnectedness, and social justice – throughout internal and external communications and relationships, work and decision-making
  • Demonstrated understanding of gender justice, racial justice and LGBTQ justice movements, grassroots advocacy, and community organizing.
  • Strong gender and racial justice or equity lens, with an understanding of historic and systemic oppression.
  • Strong project management skills, ability to manage time efficiently, problem-solve, meet deadlines, work independently with minimal support, and ask questions and seek assistance if needed.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, and able to quickly gather, synthesize and summarize information in a clear and jargon-free manner.
  • Highly proficient with Internet and Windows-based technology (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexible working style, sense of humor, resourcefulness, and ability to take ownership of a project and hold oneself accountable for results, modelling the values of trust and respect, and interconnectedness
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and build collegial working relationships with Ms. team members, grantees, donors, peer funders, volunteers, and institutional partners, representing the Foundation through the lens of our organizational values.
  • Experience with grassroots organizations and grassroots leadership development a plus.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
