Overview

The Curator is responsible for bringing exhibits to life through programming by identifying and telling compelling stories. This individual will support program efforts associated with the expansion exhibit designers to help build exhibit experiences and acquire artifacts needed to tell those stories.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as the Museum's leader in all areas of historic interpretation, assuring that exhibits and programs are developed with integrity and sensitivity to multiple perspectives and engaging a diverse community.
  • Ensures and maintains compliance with Museum standards for documentation, care and preservation of the Museum's artifacts and archives.
  • Directs staff in the care and use of the Museum's collection of artifacts and archives, assuring that professional standards are maintained.
  • Oversees collection storage facility; and the valuing of individual artifacts, exhibitions and loan items.
  • Works to lead efforts for history interpretation within a new capital expansion project. This will include working with architects, exhibit consultants and experts to support the development of numerous exhibits/displays within the new facility.
  • Reports to the Collections Committee of the Museum Board of Trustees regarding policy changes and the accessioning/de-accessioning of items to and from the collection, on a regular basis.
  • Develops and sustain strategic partnerships with universities and professional organizations.
  • Represents the Museum's interests in meetings of professional partnerships and collaborations.
  • Participates in and, in some cases, lead strategic projects for the Museum, including exhibition development and teacher professional development workshops and institutes.
  • Serves as a leader in the community, nurturing partnerships that support exhibits and programs to help tell the Motown Story.
  • Assists in budget preparation and monitors budget to ensure stated targets are met.
  • Writes and manages grant proposals and proposals for exhibit and project funding.
  • Works in tandem with development to maximize fundraising opportunities through exhibits as they arise.
 
Position Requirements

Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of Motown Records history and current museum collections management best practices
  • Experience researching and interpreting history for public programs and/or scholarly publications.
  • Commitment to the Museum’s mission.
  • Highly developed writing and speaking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Team-oriented perspective and philosophy that honors the viewpoints and skills of others who participate in exhibition/visual development
  • Capable of working with a team to present factual and compelling exhibitions to the public and donors
  • Knowledge of Motown music and history, as well as other musical genres is preferred
  • Confidence in developing and adhering to policies and procedural standards
  • Must be self-directed, well-organized and proficient with working on several projects at once
  • Qualities of originality, imagination and creativity balanced with an ability to work within budget constraints
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; familiar PastPerfect or other collections management software preferred
  • Flexibility in working with cross-departmental teams
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and work with colleagues, volunteers and interns
  • Ability to competently represent the Museum to the public and potential donors

Work Environment

This position operates in an office setting and a public environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

Physical Demands/Strength

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use repetitive motions. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, lift and carry 20 pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, handle, grasp, and use eye/hand/foot coordination. Occasionally, the position is required to push, pull, and feel. The position requires medium work.

Environmental Conditions

Occasional atmospheric conditions and frequent temperature changes.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Salaried. This position frequently requires weekend work and some evenings.

Travel

Moderate to high travel required. Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver license, proof of auto insurance and vehicle registration.

Education/Experience

  • Masters Degree in interdisciplinary studies to include History and American Studies, African American Studies, Ethnomusicology, Musicology or equivalent experience; Ph.D. preferred
  • Expert in contemporary music a plus
  • Previous museum experience preferred
  • Prior exhibition experience required
  • At least 5 years of responsibility in a supervisory capacity
