Job Summary:

Rheinmetall Survivability Engineers focus on integrating subsystems and implementing features that protect combat vehicle crews. Technologies such as armor, anti-missile systems, anti-drone systems, IED protective features, chemical weapons filtration/sealing and fire extinguishing all contribute to keeping personnel safe in a combat environment.

A primary role for this position focuses on materials selection and development for combat vehicle armor and structure. Using their materials background, the engineer will learn the behavior of armor and base materials against ballistic penetration from kinetic energy and chemical energy threats. This position will be the primary liaison between Rheinmetall and armor/material suppliers to ensure solutions meet the right combination of performance, cost and weight.

Position Requirements

Essential Functions:

  • Support and adhere to all company safety and environmental regulations & policies.
  • Gain detailed knowledge of survivability and lethality disciplines including armor, active protection systems, IED blast mitigation, chemical weapons protection, fire prevention/extinguishing and weapons terminal effects.
  • Learn other vehicle technologies (mobility, lethality, crew station, etc.) and their contribution to survivability via internal resources, vendor/partner interactions and internet.
  • Accurately report work scope and hours to Survivability lead and engineering leaderships
  • Review Technical Documents and Safety Statements according to law and/or contractual conditions.
  • Participate and contribute system levels trade studies and analysis to determine a balanced system design
  • Support and participate in subsystem and vehicle-level integration, testing and verification activities
  • Represent the company or the Survivability team at internal meetings or meetings with subcontractors, partners and customers. The role eventually lead so being our company’s primary interface to some of these entities.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time. Occasional travel to Europe may be required.
  • Undertake other duties as determined by the Engineering Director, Survivability Manager or their delegates.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • None.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (as demonstrated through experience, training and/or testing)

  • Interest in the domain of vehicle survivability technologies and equipment
  • Materials engineering or chemical engineering background
  • Practical ‘hands on’ attitude with the ability to operate independently.
  • Ability to present technical solutions to clients and internal stakeholders in meeting environments
  • Has the ability to obtain US Defense clearance up to SECRET
  • Well-rounded engineering background with coursework in mechanical engineering, electrical, software and materials

Education:

  • BSc Engineering required (e.g. Materials or Chemical Engineering)

Experience:

  • 0-2 Years of experience in Engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to manipulate or create components in 3D modelling software (CREO, etc.)
  • Military experience
  • Has the ability to obtain US Defense clearance up to TOP SECRET
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering and related Standards/ Processes
  • Interest and experience in
  • Military history/technology
  • Firearms and related optics
  • Videogames (real time strategy, 1st person shooter or RPG) interest and experience
  • 3D printing, welding, wood shop, metal shop or other fabrication technologies
  • Background Prerequisites:
  • Must undergo and meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks and controlled substance testing.
  • All employment at ARV is contingent upon the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance if the position requires it.
