About the Organization Agency Description: Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles is the nation’s largest Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) legal and civil rights organization and serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Founded in 1983 as the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Advancing Justice - LA’s mission is to advocate for civil rights, provide legal services and education, and build coalitions to positively influence and impact Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and to create a more equitable and harmonious society. Description

Position Summary:

The Policy Director leads the development, execution, and evaluation of Advancing Justice-LA's policy work and works closely with organizational partners and strategic collaborations to influence legislative and budget outcomes to positively impact the AANHPI communities. The position serves as a liaison and overseer of the work to ensure that priority positions and targeted local, state and national advocacy outcomes are effectively achieved. (with a strong emphasis on state policy) The Policy Director collaborates and coordinates across the organization to determine policy and advocacy priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead collaborative engagement with organizational leadership to uplift a policy agenda and strategy aligned with the organization's priorities
  • Build and manage a team of staff within the Policy Unit, as well as train and work collaboratively with staff in other program areas to engage effectively in policy advocacy
  • Keep abreast of pressing legislation and regulations that will significantly impact issues related to the organization's ongoing work
  • Measure the effectiveness of policy/work initiatives
  • Define and lead work plans to meet objectives
  • Provide leadership and ongoing support to key coalitions, networks and collaborations
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Development teams to strengthen Advancing Justice-LA's positioning across its core areas of focus and increase engagement of stakeholders
  • Serve as an ambassador of Advancing Justice-LA's mission and policy advocacy priorities
  • Develop and maintain relationships across constituents and partners
  • All other duties as assigned

 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent work experience.
  • A minimum of five years of demonstrated experience in policy advocacy work at the local, state and/or federal levels
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and a strong understanding of the issues impacting the AANHPI communities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Subject matter experience on policy issues impacting AANHMPI communities and AJ-LA’s priority areas a plus, such as immigration, education equity, and voting rights
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and an ability to help shape broader communications strategies
  • Experience working with diverse coalitions and collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with decision makers, community partners and diverse stakeholders
  • Demonstrated management and supervisory experience
  • Able to regularly travel once it is deemed safe to do so
