Job Description

Position: Handwork Teacher

Status: Part-time Salaried

Primary Function:

Linden Waldorf School is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to serve as handwork teacher for grades one through six. The curriculum reflects age-appropriate lessons and projects that meet the students' changing developmental needs and inspire a love for learning. The handwork skills taught at LWS evolve from simple knitting (1st and 2nd grade), through crocheting (3rd grade), cross-stitching (4th grade), multi-needle knitting (5th grade) and, in middle school, hand sewing and machine sewing of dolls and simple clothing.

Primary Duties:

  • Prepare for and instruct students in a variety of handwork skills, working to produce age-appropriate items such as dolls and simple clothing
  • Create, maintain, and manage an engaging, informative classroom
  • Instruct students in proper safety procedures in the classroom and adhere to all safety regulations
  • Develop and maintain a safe, harmonious social environment for the students
  • Document and record student progress, primarily through the use of narrative descriptions and grades, according to agreed-upon standards

Additional Duties:

  • Hold parent meetings and parent/teacher conferences and provide regular written communication for parents as needed or required
  • Participate in weekly section meetings, weekly faculty meetings, and all faculty in-services
  • Provide written mid-year and year-end reports for the student's permanent record to include, but not limited to, documentation of any classroom incidents or behavior of note, whether positive or negative
  • Participate as needed in school events
  • Attendance at the All School Meetings called by the Board of Trustees
  • Participate in the design and execution of an individualized plan for professional development
  • Willingness to attend relevant Waldorf education training as set forth by LWS as part of an individual professional development plan
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting grades teachers with lunch, serving on school committees, recess, and dismissal duties

Physical Job Requirements for all Linden Waldorf School Employees - Must be able to:

  • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, standing or sitting
  • Move about to reach students and/or access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Ascend/descend stairs and traverse campus
  • Position self as needed, including bending, crouching, kneeling, lifting, reaching
  • Lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
  • Frequently communicate with students, parents, colleagues and leadership
  • Actively supervise students with focus, even when distractions are present
  • Work in various outdoor weather conditions for extended periods of time

Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or related experience

Strong handwork skills in knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, sewing

Preferred Qualifications

1–2 years previous classroom experience

Have completed or be willing to complete Waldorf certification
