Job Title: Farm Manager/Extension Agent Assistant

Reports To: Farm Manager

Status: Full time/ Non-exempt/ Temporary (Grant funded - two years)

Salary: $13.54 - $15.00 an hour (DOE)

SUMMARY: The Assistant Farm Manager will be willing to learn and utilize their knowledge, experience, and talents in assisting with farming, gardening, and youth programs and community projects to enhance learning about agriculture and natural resources. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Assist the Farm Manager with farming, gardening, and youth program activities;
  • Acquire an understanding of flood and drip irrigation systems to include set up and maintenance, rain/run-off water harvesting, contour planning and drip, flood, land leveling methods;
  • Utilize natural, sustainable methods of fertilization and pest control, including compost creation; seed collecting and seed saving, especially traditional crops;
  • Harvest wild crops: including mesquite flour mill use, demonstrations and workshops;
  • Garden planning and maintenance from planting to harvest at West/Main Campus, as well as other sites, such as schools and villages;
  • Participate in healthy and traditional foods promotions and projects;
  • Gain familiarity with large scale farming and methods (San Xavier Coop, TOFA);
  • Organize meetings and events, such as farmers markets and/or workshops;
  • Assist and teach lab classes, interns, and visitors as needed;
  • Work nights and weekends as needed;
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED);
  • Two years’ related work experience and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Consideration May Be Given To Individuals with the Following Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in a related field.
  • Ability to speak and understand O’odham and/or Spanish.
  • Knowledge and understanding in the history, culture, traditions, and contemporary issues facing Native peoples.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Arizona Driver’s license with no DUI's or major traffic offenses within the past year.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and finger print clearance.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Customer service principles;
  • Interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of various social and cultural backgrounds;
  • Desire to work outside, work with plants and animals, and work with youth;
  • Use of basic tools, equipment, and machinery (tractor) to include maintenance and safety.

SKILLS:

  • Using a computer and related software (Microsoft Office);
  • Knowledge of MS Word and Publisher software;
  • Carry out multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Follow instructions furnished in verbal or written format;
  • Written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
 
Work Environment TOCC is a tribal college located on the Tohono O'odham Nation, 60 miles west of Tucson. The Farm Manager/Extension Agent Assistant will work closely with members of the Tohono O'odham Nation within a multicultural setting.
