POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The Assistant Summer Camp Director assists in coordinating and organizing the camp schedule and activities, both on site and off site providing quality summer programs that are safe, fun, and encourage kids to grow and learn in a supportive environment.  The Assistant Camp Director will support the Camping Services Director’s leadership role in camp and will assist with camp leadership by organizing, leading camp activities, and by providing administrative office support.  The Assistant Director is responsible for supervision of all camp programs in the absence of the Camping Services Director.   May live with a cabin group, supporting the cabin leader.  An acceptable driving record and three seasons camp or other leadership experience required. 

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for mature staff members to role model healthy living and the YMCA’s four character values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. We expect our staff to have a genuine liking for youth and a character that fits our camp values.

Camp is for people who love working with kids and roughing it in the outdoors. The ideal staff member enjoys hiking, camping, and cooking over a fire. They don’t mind the insects or rodents and can survive without a shower everyday. Staff must feel comfortable working as a part of a team, have the desire to pitch in when needed and stay positive throughout these experiences. The staff must be able to uphold the standards and policies and be willing to live in an alcohol, tobacco and drug-free living environment. This will be a challenging and rewarding summer job experience!

The Camp Facilities and Site

Camp is a rustic living environment, with several modern conveniences. Most cabins sleep 8 people and have electric lights. While all cabins have windows and doors, small critters will likely visit from time to time. Showers and restrooms are centrally located in our main lodge with additional Showers and restrooms located in the Outdoor Environmental Education Building. Camp has a somewhat rugged and hilly terrain, with temperatures in the summer ranging from 40 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

 

 
Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Work with the Camping Services Director jointly overseeing all camp programming, including activities, evening programs, scheduling, cabin activities, wakeups and weekend programs.

  2. Develop and execute clear and measurable improvements and new ideas to programming that meet or exceed ACA and YMCA standards.

  3. Supervise on site staff.  Provide leadership as directed by coordinating, organizing, or leading camp activities.  Inspire other staff to maintain high standards across all areas of programming. Delegate effectively to ensure goals are continually met in a timely manner and of high quality.

  4. Provide camper supervision within established policies, procedures, and risk management guidelines.

  5. Evaluate the summer camp programs while in session.

  6. Continually assess current systems and processes, and critically analyze areas for improvement to support the bigger picture vision.

  7. Support all staff by checking in with them consistently. Challenge and guide staff with care while exemplifying YMCA values and philosophies

  8. Work with other camp leaders of various domains (Kitchen, Office, Coordinators, Specialists) to ensure all domains of responsibility are held with care and consistency throughout the summer.

    OTHER POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  9. Be an expert in child development and behavioral guidance with campers and be able to lead and model compassionate and intentional behavioral management techniques Lead and assist in program areas and special activities as scheduled.
  10. Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  11. Maintain and deliver accurate records.
  12. Assists in security of camp participants, property and facilities.
  13. Responds to emergency situations.
  14. Documents all accidents/ incidents per established YMCA policies, procedures and as required by law.
  15. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.

  2. Applicant must be age 21 or older at time of application.

  3. Acceptable driving record.

  4. Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications and Washington State Food Handler’s Permit required before start date.

  5. 3+ years of experience in summer camp or other directly applicable leadership experience.

  6. Proven leadership and successful track record in people and project management.

  7. Strong communication and facilitation skills.

  8. Criminal background clearance within association standards.

  9. Lifeguarding, Low Ropes, other relevant certifications, and/or CDL-passenger endorsement preferred.

  10. Ability to reside at the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp for duration of employment per the employee’s letter of agreement (typically 7-10 weeks) is required.  Room and board provided.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. The job functions are performed in a rustic, outdoor environment and in a variety of buildings and outdoor settings.  Sufficient strength, agility and mobility needed to perform essential functions and to supervise program participants and activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
  2. Live onsite during the summer months in a rustic cabin and may provide night time cabin staff support with 5-8 campers with the assigned cabin leader.  Working 6 days each week with a break from Friday evening until Sunday morning.  Each day staff will have scheduled time off.
  3. May assist with year round planning in the off season either onsite or remotely.
  4. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand, bend, climb stairs, sit and reach during a portion of the day, and must be able to move around the environment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  5. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
  6. Respond to emergency situations throughout the Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp facilities and grounds
