Job Summary:

The Director of Curatorial Affairs and Collection manages the Curatorial Department and all aspects of its operations, working in collaboration with all departments of the Museum. The position, reporting to the Deputy Director, Creative Content and Programming, is also responsible for the stewardship and further development of the museum collection as well the conceptualization and realization of a range of museum programs including exhibitions, collection installations, as well as advising and participating in interpretive initiatives. The incumbent engages the public and disseminates knowledge on the Academy collection through exhibitions, publications, lectures, symposia, gallery talks, and other innovative public programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages Curatorial Department staff, policies, procedures, and budgets;
  • Organizes and runs curatorial department meetings;
  • Organizes exhibitions of different scales, ranging from major thematic or monographic shows to more focused exhibitions;
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive, long-range collecting plan in collaboration with the Director of the Museum and Deputy Director of Creative Content and Programming;
  • Conducts and oversees research relevant to the understanding, use, loan, display, and care of works of art in the collection;
  • Assures proper identification or authentication, documentation, conservation, and interpretation of works in the collection.
  • Works closely with Deputy Director of Creative Content and Programming and Head of Registration and Collection Management to ensure coordination of processes, procedures, and information related to collection;
  • Identifies objects for potential acquisition, prepares materials related to acquisition, and participates in acquisition meetings.
  • Participates in the deaccessioning process.
  • Recommends approval or denial of loan requests from other institutions as well as researches and recommends insurance values for outgoing loans.
  • Serves as a key spokesperson for the Museum's collection and the exhibitions, engaging the public and disseminating knowledge related to Museum initiatives and film history in general;
  • Oversees and cultivates contacts with filmmakers, artists, scholars, curators, critics, authors, and other colleagues in the field and culture in general;
  • Works with Advancement staff as needed to cultivate individuals, corporations, and foundations that may donate funds and/or goods and services in support of the museum's exhibitions;
  • Other duties as required.
 
Position Requirements
  • MA in film studies, museum studies, or related field, supported by significant scholarship in the field including exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible curatorial and museum or equivalent management experience;
  • A strong professional track record in non-profit institutional administration, strategic planning, and building collaborative relationships, with demonstrable results;
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing collections;
  • Demonstrated experience working with artists and filmmakers on projects and/or exhibitions
