Position Title: Communications Specialist

Location: Herndon, VA

Status: Full-Time

Description Summary:

The Corporate Communications Team of China Telecom Americas is looking for a Communications Specialist with experience in Strategic Alliance and Media Relations.

You will help us expand and maintain relationships with our strategic allies in academia, thank tanks, nonprofit organizations and industry groups. You will also assist the team with pitching stories to reporters, monitoring the media, developing messages and organizing events.

Major Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Working directly with the director of corporate communications, outside agencies and other stakeholders to develop and manage strategic alliances.

  • Lead third-party outreach initiatives, including identifying opportunities and targets, researching background information, developing relationships and maintaining alliance readiness.

  • Mobilize third-party resources to support CTA's communications efforts, including working as part of a team to identify newsworthy angles, pitch reporters and maintaining media relations.

  • Monitor and analyze CTA mentions in the media; and periodically compile media reports to the executive team.

  • Participate in the creation of content for internal and external audiences, including press releases, op-eds, position papers, talking points, quotes, blogs, newsletters, infographics, annual reports, videos, conferences and special events.

  • Offer an internal 'client service' type experience, demonstrating the ability to manage priorities while maintaining strong relationships with internal, cross-functional team members.

  • Act as project manager - creating timelines and action plans to drive key projects to completion.

  • Grow social media influences that drive national and local engagement.

  • Provide support for high-profile China Telecom Americas events.

Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Political Science, English or similar disciplines, required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years corporate communications experience, with at least 1 year managing strategic alliance, working in a public affairs agency or in-house communications team.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and networking skills.

  • Exceptional written communication skills tailored for corporate communications.

  • Issue expertise in international telecom, cyber security and US-China relations are strongly preferred.

  • Strong familiarity with the US and International media landscape.

  • Ability to think strategically, translating business objectives into integrated actionable communication strategies.

  • Ability to think outside the box and solve unique problems.

  • Ability to influence through strong interpersonal, diplomatic and persuasive skills to assist groups in achieving consensus and buy-in.

  • Ability to work effectively in informal and formal teams with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to take initiatives, proactively add value, and manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint); Proficiency with public relations tools such as CISION; Proficiency with social media platforms.
